As a programmer, web designer, and pc technician I have been addicted to on-line social networking for almost a decade. And for me it is much easier with my busy daily schedule to have that not-so-personal-quickie interaction with the masses than it would be to have 15 to 30 phone conversations every night. Yes, I am really am a geek. :)
I was a "MySpacer" long before I finally succumbed to the on-line world of "Facebooking" but I was never really comfortable on MySpace. First, most of my MySpace friends did not go by their legal name. This makes it very difficult for me to let my guard down and share personal or even business information with most people for fear they will stalk or even kill me. With Facebook you are required to register with a "legitimate" name and although it does not necessarily have to be your legal name I have found many more people do here than on MySpace. But, even on Facebook you will see the occasional obscure name like Chris Imnottellin or Hearts Happen.
One thing I have noticed as a frequent "Facebooker" is that it can definitely be used as an effective business or professional networking connection generator. MySpace always struck me as somewhat cheesy and childish thought especially now that I have been using Facebook. The layout of a Facebook page is much more linear and usually viewed with black text on a white background which is the easiest on the eyes to read. Sometimes on Facebook users will download an add-on application that will allow them to display other backgrounds but the nice thing is that you will still see their Facebook pages with a white background and black text unless you also download this add-on.
Facebook also provides several types of pages that can be used for different types of users. There is the Facebook Profile that is created for a person or individual who collects Friends. And then there is the Facebook Fan Page that is used for non-profit organizations, businesses, celebrities, objects, and pretty much anything you could be interested in, and Pages collect Fans. You can also create distinct pages for Groups and Applications on Facebook as well but the last I knew there was only one type of page creation on MySpace.
All factors combined Facebook is a much better social networking site than MySpace if you are looking to not only place games and interact with friends and family (which you can do on either) but also to present yourself or your business in a professional manner (which I feel is only possible on Facebook) come join the rest of us on Facebook and be sure to check out my page www.facebook.com/ocdmbfan and add me as a Friend!!!
