In the Year 3004

Deborah Coss
She sat on what was once the foundation of one of the buildings of the old days…
And she watched as the sky turned colors and the sun started to set,
And the full moon which seemed very close, took over the sky…
She watched as the large ebony birds came close,
And then suddenly swoop away from the ruins.
She has a very sad feeling inside.
She wondered what the people who had built the buildings had been like?
Were they anything like her, or her family, or her village?
Why had they burned down and torn down what they built?
She felt as if she was not really alone, as if spirits surrounded her.
And she felt the sadness grow deeper and larger.
She heard the stories… Some said they were like gods, and had everything,
And some said they ran wild, like dogs, fighting for every scrap.
And yet, here was all that was their legacy, cities that were no more.
She let a heavy sigh escape her mouth, and a tear rolled down her cheek.
And the one thing that really amazed her was this…
This sadness and sense of loss was for a people she had never met, never known.
And she thought that maybe that was what they meant, when they said,
"Blood Cries For Blood."
She finally got up to move towards her village before the sun went all the way down,
And she become a target for the ebony birds that swooped on anything that moved in the dark.
