Christopher Nolan is the mastermind behind this summer's blockbuster movie Inception and he is the one who dreamed up the Inception ending. Prior to confusing us with the Inception ending Christopher has been responsible for "The Dark Knight", "Memento" and "The Prestige".
The Inception ending require that one really open their mind to the possibilities of layer upon layers of dreams. The basic idea of the film is that our hero, Dom Cobb that is played brilliantly by Leonardo Dicaprio, can insert himself into other people's subconscious as they dream and can plant ideas in their mind. Then he must get back out to reality without the person knowing he was there.
Dom Cobb is very, very good at doing this even if there is a constant underlying concern about both his sanity and his ability to not remain trapped in the Inception dream-state, alternate reality. He has help from a gifted student named Ariadne, played by Ellen Page. Ariadne is Dom's dream architect, she is there to construct the Inception dream structure.
Dom's handicap, as we find out in the Inception ending, is his own guilt that he carries with him throughout the movie. Spoiler alert here, if you haven't seen the Inception ending then you may want to stop reading now.
His guilt is deeply seeded because his dead wife, Mal, took her own life and Dom blames himself for that. He first tried Inception with his wife Mal and they constructed an entire dream world of their own and lived there for a very long time, it seems that time is warped in dreams and while five minutes may pass in reality time, that can be weeks or years in Inception dream time.
So after Dom and Mal construct this Inception world she believes that it is reality, Dom, through Inception, plants an idea in her mind that she has to die to get back to reality. Mal takes that idea back to reality with her and she ends up committing suicide in reality.
An important note is that each person who attempts Inception must have a unique token that they carry with them to help them know when they are in dream state and when they are in reality. Dom's was a small, balanced top that would spin perfectly forever in dream state, but topple in reality.
In the end all Dom wants to do is get back to America to his children. He arrives and to be sure he is in reality he spins the top. It spins perfectly, but then at the last seconds of Inception it begins to just barely wobble.
So does this mean that Dom is in the 'real' reality and is finally back with his children? Maybe. Or is it possible that Dom is still in a dream-state layer and he doesn't know it. I like to think that the Inception ending means that Dom is finally home.

Post a CommentI didn't even think to look at the wedding ring. Brilliant observation.
Dom's totem is his wedding ring. he only wears it in dream state. he had to break into Mal's old house and safe from when she was a little kid to steal her totem as it showed in the movie. therefore, the end is almost irrelevent
The totem was not Dom's, it was Mal's. Terrible fact checking is terrible.
Sounds like a great movie. Thanks! Iand I hope you did not pay the 'Lola' comment any attention. Great article!
well i think you can look at it two ways, one is that the top starts wobbling because its about to fall meaning that he is back in reality. Or two is that the only reason the top starts wobbling is because the airplane has landed or hit turbulence causing a minor earthquake in the dream world.
