Incheon International Airport South Korea

Tips for International Travelers in Korea

Maggie Ray
Incheon International Airport is the premier airport of South Korea. The Incheon airport is a very nice facility less than ten years old. I recently traveled to Korea and found processing in through Immigrations is a very smooth easy process which does not take an extended amount of time considering the number of people going through the line. The Incheon Airport is easy enough for a non-Korean speaking individual to find their way around without difficulties. Here are a few things I learned on my recent trip that may be useful in your South Korea travels.

Finding Information at Incheon International Airport
There are information desks throughout the airport. The Information agents at Incheon Airport are very helpful and pointed me to bus locations, where to find a rental phone, how to catch a taxi, and other useful information. When looking at the map of the terminal, just look for the question mark to find where the closest information agent is found.

Exchanging Currency at Incheon International Airport
When traveling to a foreign country one of the first things I like to do is exchange currency so I have enough to start the trip with local funds on hand. You may do this at your departing airport but if not, you will find currency exchange cashiers in several locations at the Incheon airport. The cashiers are friendly and understand English. They will exchange your dollars (or other currency) for the Korean Won and provide a receipt showing the amount of the transaction. For a business traveler, this receipt is a good thing to hold on to for use with the expense report. Most travelers will need at least some won on hand immediately when leaving the airport in order to pay for transportation. For travelers going to a larger city, it is advisable to exchange only what you need at the airport because exchange rates are better in the outlying areas. Money exchange is readily available in many locations in the country.

Cost of Food and Goods at Incheon International Airport
It may be surprising to US travelers to find the cost of food at the Incheon airport is lower than some of the surrounding city locations. It certainly was to me. The cost of food in a US airport is much higher than local restaurants. That's not the case here. For instance, a cup of coffee at the Incheon International Airport Dunkin Donuts is about 4000 won. That same cup of coffee in Seoul or Itaewon is more than 5000 won and may even be a smaller cup. A value meal at McDonalds at the Incheon airport is about 5000 won while in Seoul the cost is anywhere for 6000 to 8000 won.

Phone Rental at Incheon International Airport
Incheon International Airport offers travelers the chance to rent a cell phone for use in the country. There are four or five different phone providers on the first floor as soon as you come in from the arrival gates. Travelers need a credit card to secure a phone but the process was very simple. The agent showed me how to use the phone. The phone had the number printed on the handset for ease in knowing how to tell people to call you. I was given a sheet which explained how to call the US and how to call within Korea. The cost was much more reasonable than using my US cell phone even though I have worldwide coverage.

Departing Flights for Incheon International Airport
I arrived early for my flight departure. The airport is open through the night so you may enter for early morning flights with no problem. It is best to check with your airline in advance though as my carrier did not open ticket counters until 0630 so my early arrival was not productive.

Traveling into Korea though the Incheon International Airport was a pleasant experience for me. The airport works hard to accommodate the customers and make the experience a cheerful one.
