Incontinence Sufferers: How to Cope with Harsh Judgment

Reina Brown
Part of being an incontinence sufferer is dealing with harsh judgment and terrible and unnecessary criticism. Sadly, this will be a part of an incontinence sufferer's life, especially if adult diapers are needed to manage the condition, until the walls of stigma that de vide incontinent people from the rest of society are torn down and more knowledge and awareness is brought to the public. Until then, however, incontinent people will have to do the best they can to not allow those people to get to them and continue living their lives. If you are newly incontinent and are having a hard time dealing with the blows that family and friends are dealing to you, or if you are just having trouble coping with being incontinent, or if you needed to use adult diapers to manage your condition, in general because people are constantly judging you, don't lose hope. There are three strategies that you can apply that will help to make life easier for you.

First of all, you have to make up your mind not to allow people to get to you. When you make the decision, life gets much easier because you will then allow their insults and harsh judgments to roll off your back just as a duck lets water roll off his back.

After you have made up your mind to not allow people to get to you, then you can work on carrying yourself as if your incontinence is no big deal. This involves a change of attitude, as you will need to go from feeling depressed and ashamed to confident and brave. When you carry yourself in such a way around others, they will also feel as though your situation is no big deal and will treat you as such.

Finally, you should get yourself involved in social activities where there are people that are more than likely to accept you for who you are. You can get involved with support groups that are specifically for helping incontinent people, so you can talk to others who are like you in order to know that you are not alone, and you can get suggestions that will help you better cope and manage your condition. You can also get involved with volunteering with organizations that are more than likely to understand people with medical problems, such as volunteering with hospitals or nursing homes.

If you apply these three strategies in your life, you will not only feel better about yourself, you can better handle the harsh judgments and criticism that will more than likely come your way. No more will those ignorant people consume your well being. I can attest that these strategies definitely do work because when I had to deal with harsh criticism from ignorant people, I applied all three of these strategies in my own life, and it made everything better for me. No more do I feel ashamed of my condition. Rather, I'm confident, and nothing ignorant that anyone says will get to me. If I CAN DO IT, THEN YOU CAN ALSO.
