Increase Fertility Without Drugs or Medical Interventions

For a Christian, it isn't usually permissible to take fertility drugs or to use medical interventions to start a family. It is, however, acceptable in most religions to use natural methods to enhance fertility.

Weight Control

When my husband and I were trying to conceive, I was overweight. While this doesn't hinder some women from conceiving, my doctor thought that I needed to lose some weight since I had previously conceived at a lower weight.

Instead of crash dieting, I opted for a slow weight loss of 1.5 pounds per week. I ate a healthy diet and exercised to get my weight down. Once I was at a suitable weight for my height according to the body mass index, I knew that I was one step closer to conceiving.

Timed Intercourse

While I have never used timed intercourse to conceive, I know some couples who have. These women chart their menstrual cycles, take a basal body temperature each morning and only have intercourse on the days they should be fertile, which is on the days the temperature is slightly elevated. It is, however, necessary to have intercourse more than just those few days each month to keep the sperm count up.

In my case, I charted my cycle and took my basal body temperature so I could know when I was most likely to conceive and so that I would notice if my period was late. I have a slightly irregular menstrual cycle so charting and taking my temperature made it easier to determine when my period should come.

When I finally got pregnant, it was my daily charting and temperature taking that clued me in on the fact that I was pregnant. When a woman isn't pregnant, her temperature goes down after ovulation, but when she is pregnant, it stays elevated throughout the pregnancy.

Stress Reduction

Stress is another factor that can affect fertility-for both the man and the woman. To combat the stress my husband and I dealt with at home and at work, we took relaxing walks and planned relaxing evenings at home complete with takeout food and a comedy. We also gave up on the idea of getting pregnant because that was one of our major stressors.

Bottom Line

Since the days of using these methods, my husband and I have had three healthy children. In the end, a healthy body and mind can help you to conceive and have a healthy pregnancy-all while feeling better.
