It was not that long ago that home security alarms were only found in upper class homes. Now, prices have dropped and they are becoming more affordable for the median family. Many who decide to invest in burglars alarm opt for the 'Do-It-Yourself" systems. These systems can be wired or wireless, and will activate upon unauthorized entry into your home.

The two most common systems that are available today are open circuit alarms, and closed circuit alarms. These systems operate exactly how they sound. An open circuit alarm in an uninterrupted state has circuit that is open, or not connected. When a door or window is opened, the circuit is closed or connected, activating the alarm. Closed circuit systems are the opposite of open circuit systems. When a door or window is opened, the circuit breaks from its closed state and activates the alarm. In my experience, closed circuit systems have been more reliable.

Another option to consider with your burglar system are motion sensors. These are sophisticated pieces of equipment use infrared technology to detect motion in certain places. Generally speaking you or the installer will setup motion sensors around entry areas of the home. A good setup will allow you to set a sensitivity level for the sensors as you do not the alarm activating for small things like animals or rodents.

Motion sensors can also be used in conjunction with magnetic switches to increase the security in your home. Magnetic switches are generally to be used for small rooms, windows, and doors. They work by using a magnetic sensors, and when the magnetic field is disturbed, the alarm is activated.

A security camera is another add on that you can put on your security setup. They are a very powerful tool that you may want to consider if you have something very valuable to protect. If a burglar does manage to penetrate your home, a recorded video can be turned into the police which can aid in finding the thief.

If you wish to have a burglar alarm professionally installed, there are many local and nationwide companies that can do this for you. One of the advantage of these security networks is that they continuously monitor your home. If the alarm was tripped and you were not home, the police or fire department can be called and sent over to investigate. Generally these services charge a monthly fee, but offer discounts if service is paid in advance for a year.

Security and burglar alarms are a powerful tool to combat thieves today. Safety for your family and possessions should be a top concern, so investing in a DIY system or a professionally installed system would be a great idea.
