Increase Your Job Satisfaction with 5 Quick and Easy Tips

Chris Radtke
Work is a large part of most people's lives. Unless you are lucky enough to own your own business, you probably work for someone else on top of it. This can be, and is, an extremely stressful situation for many employees. What can you do to increase your job satisfaction? There are an almost infinite number of strategies designed to make your work life more palatable. Since job satisfaction is an issue that I struggle with as well, I've tried to make use of the following techniques to increase my job satisfaction.

1. Change your own attitude

Most of the time, just changing the way you view your job and work will make a world of difference and will increase your job satisfaction. You can try strategies such as viewing problems as challenges, making up work games (if your job is boring), and trying to approach work with a generally positive attitude.

Another aspect of your attitude at work relates to your approach to your mistakes. We all make mistakes, but your reaction to these mistakes can increase your job satisfaction. Try to view mistakes as learning opportunities. Mistakes can be an integral part of your career development if you take the time to learn the lesson in each mistake. There is a reason why there are a million quotes regarding how multiple failures can add up to success.

Finally, change the relationship with your co-workers. View your colleagues as people with lives outside of work. View them as teammates and not competitors. You won't get along with everyone, but your job satisfaction can be increased by improving your work relationships with just a handful of co-workers. It will also make it easier for you to put up with your co-workers' imperfections, and easier for them to put up with yours.

2. Apply and interview for other jobs

You don't have to take another job to increase your job satisfaction. Knowing that you have options can make a world of difference. Your job satisfaction will improve if you realize that you choose to remain at your current job and are not required to. Applying and interviewing for other jobs will help you realize that there are other jobs out there and that you have options.

As an added bonus, you will receive valuable practice in the event that you lose your job or decide to search for other opportunities. Interviewing can be extremely stressful, but as with other stressful tasks, it gets easier the more you practice.

3. Develop yourself within your current career

Development may be expanding your knowledge of your field or complimentary fields, learning ways to be more accurate and/or efficient, or simply planning out your career path. It is far too easy to become complacent in a position, especially if you've been in the role for any length of time.

Your job satisfaction will increase as you become better at your job and have a plan for the future of your career. Having a goal gives you the motivation to do your best at work. It transforms your day-to-day job into a path to success, rather than an annoyance. This will increase your job satisfaction.

4. Develop interests outside of your current career

Be sure to develop interests or hobbies outside of work. If you enjoy your current field and are just in a rut in your position, developing these hobbies can help you live a more well-rounded life and increase your job satisfaction.

If you don't enjoy your job and are not sure if you wish to remain in your current field, these hobbies can give you the opportunity to determine which career you may like. You may also have the opportunity to "dip" into any careers of interest (similar to how Associated Content can function for aspiring writers).

5. Maintain a healthy work-life balance

If you don't feel a proper work-life balance is possible in your current position, you had better love what you do. Otherwise, you may want to hunt for another job. If you don't like your chosen field, or even if you just like it a little, you should make sure to find time for family, friends, exercise, and relaxation. You have one life... only one. Make a decision how you want to spend the time that you've been given.

Your best bet to increase your job satisfaction is to use a combination of these (and other) strategies. A multi-strategic method will increase the likelihood that you will successfully increase your job satisfaction, and will also likely increase the amount of the improvement. This method will also give you the opportunity to see what works and to refine your strategy in an on-going evaluation of you job satisfaction.
