Increase the Lifespan of a Projector Bulb

Jim Posey
Anyone who owns a home theatre, for any significant amount of time, will know the nausea that will come over you when you realize that you have to drop a couple of hundred dollars on a new bulb. All of a sudden you will have a flashback to when you bought the projector and the sales person explained to you about the two thousand hour battery life of the battery. However, two thousand hours is not as long as it may seem when most people use their projector some thirty hours a week. To decrease your trips to the electronic store you should follow these tips.

"Hands Off"

Handling regular light bulbs with your hands is fine, however, projector bulbs heat up to a degree that regular bulbs will never reach. Touching it with your bare hands is very detrimental to the bulb because , no matter the cleanliness of your hands, your skin secrets important moistuing oils at all times. Your bare skin will leave a coat of this oil on you bulb. After the projector bulb is heated the oils will be burnt into the bulb. This will drastically reduce the lifespan of the bulb. Hand oils will also hurt the image quality of the light bulb, as it diffuses the light. To increase the lifespan of a projector bulb always make sure to handle the bulb with a clean cloth that is used exclusively on the bulb.

"Power Off"

Your projector bulb will need to cool from the extreme temperature that it takes to project an image. Flipping off the power AFTER turning off the lamp will allow it to cool. Just like any form of matter, rapid heating and cooling will compromise the integrity of the bulb. Letting the cooling fans do their job will save your projector bulb from this traumatic experience. Likewise, allowing the fans to warm up before using the projector will also increase the lifespan of your bulb.

"Bulb on Board"

Projector bulbs are very sensitive to movements and bumping. Especially when the bulb is hot, and the filament is more malleable. The bulb filament is very sensitive even during normal use. Of course most people know that you should be careful with electronic equipment, however to increase the lifespan of a projector bulb, you should take an extra moment or two for caution when cleaning and make sure that the bulb is properly mounted after cleaning.
