Increased Internet Use in 2009: Economic Woes will Prompt Web Lifestyles

M. Kaye Hash
As the world fights the realization that the "Golden Age of Oil" is over, we will all have to go through a financial shuffle. Many of us will have to learn that the lives we have led for decades cannot continue. If the environment could not do it, then the lack of cash in our bank accounts will demand that we learn to control ourselves. We will head to the one place to learn about this new world that we do not have to drive to.

If we thought the Internet was the place to go for information and commerce before, the next year will see a drastic jump in its usage and the monetary transactions that will take place throughout it. Unlike almost all other entertainment and retail, the internet does not cost a family any gas to get to, and a family can buy almost everything they need without having to leave the comfort of their home.

Sections of the Internet that have been underutilized or too costly will become mainstays. One of the few Internet products in which finding a deal was almost impossible has been to buy groceries online but this may become more attractive if the higher cost of buying online outweighs the cost of gas to pick it up from the store. As prices soar web cameras will become the new way to visit with the family that many cannot afford to visit. Businesses will find that internet conferences will save them a bundle in hotel and air fare. Others will find that letting employees work from home even one day a week or shortening the work week to four days will help their own bottom line as well as the bottom line of their employees.

As the word recession looms over many parts of the world, and the average consumer feels as if it has fallen on them, the information the internet contains will become even more important. Families will take more time to research ways to grow their own food, pay off their debt, and use less gasoline. Personal finance websites and auction websites will benefit from people trying to manage their bills, sell what they can and find the best deals on what they need to buy. Other sites, such as alternative energy websites, will show a drastic increase in visitors as people look for ways to lower their heating bills.

It may be surprising to find that in the next year, while many commercial sectors fall, consumer confidence lowers and homes go through foreclosure, e-commerce and internet usage will show an increase in profitability and will see a stronger flow of cash going through than any real life sector.

In a way, I'm a bit ahead of the curve, having worked from home for the last five years, and slowly moving to ordering everything online except perishables... there is definitely going to be a shift! Good topic!
