Increasing Concentraton with a Meditation Timer

Techniques for Writers

Dan Reveal
Because concentration is one of the main ingredients in effective writing, I will want to take advantage of those tools and techniques for achieving better focus.

One of the techniques for increasing concentration in writing, for example, is to use a timing device. By setting an egg timer for 15 minutes, for example, I am directed by this tool to write continuously without proofreading until the bell goes off.

At the end of that time, I set aside this rough draft which my free flow of ideas has made possible, and begin another article.

Precautionary Statement

The problem with increasing concentration with a regular timing device is that the alarm clock or kitchen timer becomes a type of distraction in itself. I feel that I am paying more attention to the ticking sound, for example, than I am to the article's content.

The Value of a Meditation Timer

A better method for increasing concentration with a timer, then, is to use an online meditation timer.

The meditation timer found here is a good example of the benefits of veering away from more ordinary kitchen timers.

Because a meditation timer is meant to aid in meditation where a person isn't meant to have to keep track of time, increasing concentration can be associated with a deeper state of peace and free flowing ideas.

Instead of an intrusive alarm which signals when the writing session is supposed to be over, a small bell sounds every 2-5 minutes which gently refocuses the writer's ideas into that particular interval of time.

The time intervals help to increase concentration because they act as fenced in pastures in which the wild and chaotic horses of intellectual thinking can be corralled and turned into something productive.

For example, I am using this article as an experiment to see the real effectiveness of increasing concentration with a meditation timer. I am setting a goal of writing the article's rough draft in 10 minutes.

As I hear the first bell of the meditation timer, I know that two minutes have elapsed while I don't feel the need to look at the clock.

As suggested before, because the time intervals act as fenced in metaphorical pastures in my meditative state of thinking, I can organize the flow of ideas in accordance with these two minute intervals.

The introduction of the rough draft begins. Then, as the 2 minute bell sounds my thoughts should flow naturally into the first subheading, and so forth.

Increasing concentration with a meditation timer is actually a relaxing experience that helps the writer to maintain a sense of calm.

Just listen for the bells to guide the way.

And, as a result of using this meditation timer, my concentration was increased to the point of being able to write the rough draft in the time mentioned.

Now I set this aside and, in following the general technique for increasing concentration in writing, come back to proofread it later.

The experiment was a success!

Interesting - I wonder if it would help save me from interruptions from others that are around the house when I am trying to concentrate?
