Increasing Your Vehicle's Fuel Efficiency is Easier Than You Think

Many automakers and consumers have grown increasingly aware of the need for better fuel efficiency. New cars nearly always have better gas mileage ratings than older cars that they replace. However, buying a new car is not always an option for all of us. So what can you do to get the best fuel efficiency out of your current car?

First, it must be noted that the gains from each operation listed below will definitely vary from vehicle to vehicle. Second, do not expect a substantial increase in fuel efficiency. Each of the tips and tricks and products listed below will slightly improve your fuel efficiency. Combined, all of the techniques could net you an improvement of 10 to 15% better fuel efficiency. But for those of us without the option of buying a more efficient, new car, this is the best solution.

The first step to increasing your fuel efficiency is to make sure that your vehicle performs as expected. A dirty air filter or fouled spark plugs will increase the fuel consumption of your vehicle. Focus on getting any repairs done first. Have your vehicle inspected and repairs performed as needed.

Once the repairs are performed and your vehicle is in perfect working order, you can focus on simple techniques used to increase fuel efficiency. First, increase your tire pressure a few psi over the manufacturers specs. The manufacturer nearly always posts specs that are designed with ride comfort in mind. By increasing the psi, you have less rolling resistance which increases your gas mileage. As a side benefit, higher psi will enhance the handling of your vehicle. Never exceed the tire manufacturers maximum psi rating found on the tire sidewall.

Second, keep your vehicle clean both inside and out. A clean exterior enhances the aerodynamics of your vehicle. The increase is slight, but is said to be noticeable. A cluttered interior and trunk is needless weight. remove items that are not essential. By reducing weight, your fuel efficiency will increase.

Finally, when it comes time for new tires, consider tires designed specifically to increase fuel efficiency. New tires have reached the market that can increase your fuel efficiency by as much as 5%. These tires are commonly referred to as eco-tires, or green tires. The tries increase your fuel efficiency by reducing rolling resistance.

Though each of the simple steps listed above will only increase efficiency slightly, the combined affect will be noticeable. By performing all of the steps listed above, you will extract the most fuel efficiency possible out of your current vehicle and it will not cost you a significant amount of money. Short of purchasing a new vehicle, these steps will get the mileage expected out of your current ride.
