Increasing Web Site Traffic with Third Party Content

Steve Johnson
Every internet surfer knows that the more content there is on a site, the more often visitors will return. Less obvious is the fact that content can add to the number of first-time visitors, because every new word or phrase on your site adds to the number of web searches that will find the page. Even if you already know that more content will increase traffic to your site, you might not have the time or skill set necessary to create new content yourself. That's where third party content providers enter the picture.

Content providers offer a wide range of article topics that you can add to your own site. Many also offer an article writing service, allowing you to commission articles about topics relating to your site. While most content providers charge a fee for their services, the cost is negligible when compared to time requirements of generating the content in-house. Although nearly any article will bring more visitors to your site, watching your web counter click upwards is probably not your only goal. You want people to stay on your website after they've read the article, so they can find out more about the cause, product, or service you're using the site to promote. The best way to keep people on your page is to use articles that will attract visitors who are already interested (even if they don't know it yet) in the overall subject of your site.Off-topic content will attract visitors but such visitors are unlikely to remain on the site once they realize that its focus has nothing to do with the subject they came to read about.

When selecting articles for syndication, you'll want to focus on those whose subjects most closely match the interests of your target demographic. For example, let's say you're using articles to promote a web site selling Golden Age comic books. A review of the latest X-Men movie will appeal to the general demographic (people interested in super-heroes), but such visitors are not guaranteed to be comic readers, much less Golden Age collectors. An interview with Marvel's current top writer is a little better, because it will primarily bring in visitors who already read comic books. An article about the controversies surrounding the restoration of old comics is a perfect choice, because it will appeal directly to collectors of classic comics. This is not to say that every article on your site has to appeal to the specific demographic you're trying to attract. General (but still on-topic) articles can attract new customers (or activists, is you're promoting a cause rather than a product or service). It's difficult to convince someone to get involved in a new activity, though, so the bulk of articles on your site should be tightly targeted to the core demographic.More targeted articles will also increase the key word density of your site, which will improve its placement in search engine results.

When it comes to websites, content is king. It can increase first-time hits to your site and encourage return visits. If you can't create the content yourself, content providers are an excellent resource. By carefully choosing the articles you offer on your site, you can increase the likelihood that visitors will already be interested in whatever you're promoting.
