Independent Coffee Shops at the Jersey Shore

While drinking a hot cup of coffee may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the beach, even here you need a shot of caffeine to wake up. You could always throw some instant in the microwave, but the Jersey shore does have some wonderful independent coffee shops that offer a fine brew.

Avalon Coffee Company started in a little shop in Avalon, NJ (2892 Dune Drive) but now has grown to eight stores throughout Cape May County. They specialize in roasting their own beans and claim that the secret is cooling them in the ocean air. Flavors range from Avalon French Roast to Vanilla Almond and are available for sale by the pound at their locations or online. Their stores also feature bagels and smears, as well as freshly made breakfast sandwiches.

For a really unique coffee experience, head to Coffee.Comedy, 29 J. F. Kennedy Blvd. in Sea Isle City. They serve the traditional hot cup o' Joe along with specialty coffee drinks, wraps, sandwiches and homemade desserts, but on evenings in the summer they also serve up a comedy show. Shows begin at 9 p.m. and admission is $15. Sunday nights are open mic nights for aspiring musicians. WiFi Internet is also available at the location.

When visiting the Victorian town of Cape May, take a walk along the Washington Street Mall. At 414 Washington Street you will find Rick's Coffee Cafe, a great place to sit back and rest your feet after strolling and shopping. They have hot drinks, iced drinks and espresso, but the best things are the homemade desserts. These change with the seasons, so regular customers always have something new to try out.

Tired of the laid-back beach life? Head to Atlantic City and try your luck at a casino. Here you can find Cavo Crepe Café, 122 North Michigan Ave, a specialty shop that features fresh, made to order food. Their crepes, grilled paninis, and hand tossed salads are all constructed with the best ingredients. Of course they specialize in crepes, with choices ranging from ham and egg for breakfast to chicken quesadilla for lunch to beautiful fruit filled concoctions for dessert.

If you've spent any time at all driving to Jersey shore you are probably familiar with the flying geese logo of the WaWa stores. Though not independent, these stores are unique to the Mid-Atlantic States and offer a fine cup of coffee on the go.
