You cannot have the same attitude toward your independent contractors as you would a regular in-house employee. You have to remember that independent contractors work only on a contract basis. They are required to keep track of their own earnings and tax information.

Second, you have to keep in mind that you have limited control over the independent contractor. You cannot always assume that the project will be completed on time, and you have little control over the methods that the independent contractor uses to complete the project. The best way to effectively control this is to be as specific as possible. You need to provide specific information that is required to complete the project. You must also provide a specific deadline for the project to be finished, and always give a little extra time in case either party runs into unforeseen trouble.
