Indian Summer in Northern California

A Late Summer Sonnet

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

The Autumn equinox so stead'ly looms
With promises of crisp and bracing air
Painting each new morn' with blue crystal clear;
The air defies what calendars assume.
Belated gusts of swelt'ring heat arrives
Untimely inconvenience to be sure
A cool, wet swim would be a welcome cure
Until the temp'rature Falls down and dives.
Better late than never summer is right now
With firm presence and mind not slowed by heat,
Pushing back the Autumn's sharper drum beat
Unable to begin until allowed.
But soon the day will come when summer ends;
Seasons come not on cue as nature sends.
