Indiana Forward DJ White's NBA Draft Profile

Did the Pistons Make a Promise to DJ White?

Nick Meyer
DJ White was always a very good player with the Indiana Hoosiers in college, but it seemed as if the fans and the media always expected more out of him. The 6-foot-9 Alabama native made the trek up north to Indiana as a heralded prospect and left as one of the best big men in the storied Hoosier program's history.

Now that his career is over, DJ White is looking to go in the first round of the NBA Draft. Currently, he is projected as a late-first round pick.

White has a lot of strengths but also a lot of flaws so some question how effective he will be on the next level. How well he does depends on how he will be able to work on his flaws.

DJ White is first and foremost a tremendous athlete and that should get him taken in the first round of the NBA Draft. He is a very good shot-blocker and rebounder who can jump out of the gym. He's crafty around the basket and good on putbacks and he usually plays hard. He also grew into a good leader by the time he left school. His jumper is pretty solid for a big guy from mid-range, a key skill for an NBA power forward.

But DJ White also has some key weaknesses. He's not a great ballhandler and his post moves are still pretty raw despite all of his years playing in the post. He has worked to add bulk but has a ways to go in that area still and may never not have the frame to get much bigger. He also doesn't quite have the grit and the mean streak NBA teams look for in the NBA Draft when trying to pick the next solid power forward.

Overall, DJ White is a decent first-round bet or he could slide to the second round of the NBA Draft. He might be a good role player or a good backup defensive specialist off the bench but he will probably never be a star. DJ White's shot-blocking and athleticism on defense could be a good boost to just about any team's front court if the take him in the NBA Draft and work on his weaknesses.
