Indiana Jones Costume Guide

No Spandex for Halloween

Laura Ewers
For Halloween last year (2008) my 5-year-old son was Indiana Jones. We went to all of the stores trying to find a cool Indiana Jones costume; however we were very disappointed when all we found was spandex. To be honest I think the spandex looks creepy, so we were determined to find him a costume that would look better than what was available in the stores.

First thing I did was to find a picture of Indy. I found the classic picture of him in the button down dress type shirt and the leather jacket with the fedora hat and his pouch. So then I set out to find the pieces to this outfit. First I found a white button down dress shirt in my sons closet. One item down. Check. Next we went to a coat store here called Burlington Coat Factory in hopes to find a leather jacket. Sadly no such luck. I checked on the Internet the next day to see what I could find there. I was thrilled when I came accost this website that sold some Indiana Jones items such as the bag Indy carries and the hat. I bought the bag from this site however thought the hat was a bit on the pricey side so I looked elsewhere. Every year this huge Halloween store comes to town and that's where I found the perfect fedora hat (it was brown suede with a satin looking trim around the middle of the hat.) and best of all it was only $8. Such a bargain! At this same store I came accost little plastic swords. I wondered if they would have anything that would be suitable for an Indy costume, so I looked around. Sure enough they did, they had this pack that was intended for an army costume. It had a small dagger, pistol, a watch, grenade, binoculars. It was perfect.

The only thing left was pants, shoes and the leather coat.

I found a pair on khaki pants on sale at Walmart for $3. Best of all they were cargos so they worked perfectly. Shoes were just some brown leather boots. The greatest find was the coat. We had been searching for weeks with out finding anything and Halloween was quickly approaching. I went to a local Goodwill to see if they had anything. Sure enough hanging in the coat section was a brown leather coat with some wear marks on it. I was so excited when I saw it. The missing piece to the best costume ever! It was a size 7 though so it was a little big, but I knew i could just cuff up the sleeves a little bit and no one would even know. I checked out and almost fainted when the clerk told me it was only $2!

My son had a wonderful night trick or treating and everyone commented on his costume. He was indeed the best dressed Indy in our town. All in all my sons Halloween costume only ended up costing about $30, and my son to this day still loves to dress up in it.
