Indiana Prison Riot: Addition of Arizona Prisoners May Have Created Unacceptable Overcrowding Issues
Scared Indiana Prisoner Wants Media to Know Indiana Prisoners Didn't Start Riot
The New Castle Correctional Facility in Indiana is a medium-security prison. In March of 2007, Arizona and Indiana agreed to transfer 1,269 Arizona prisoners to the Indiana prison. The Indiana prison has a capacity for 2,400 prisoners. Before the transfer of Arizona prisoners began, the New Castle Correctional Facility contained approximately 1,040 prisoners.
A source, known as Deborah, claims that overcrowding issues are probably what have caused this prison riot. She claims that some of the overcrowding issues included prisoners without beds and not enough bathrooms. Deborah said she received a call from an Indiana prisoner who said he was scared and wanted the country to know that Indiana prisoners did not cause this riot. Deborah, while speaking to Neil Cavuto on Fox News Channel, begged Neil to make sure the media investigated this incident to the fullest by going to the New Castle Correctional Facility and interviewing the prisoners.
Katie Decker, Arizona Department of Corrections spokesperson, stated that some of the Arizona prisoners were not happy about being moved out of state to the New Castle Correctional Facility in Indiana. She also said that there hadn't been any trouble between the prisoners before today. Some sources think the Arizona prisoners unhappiness with having to move out of state may be partly responsible for the prison riot, however, Decker said it is too early to say for sure.
Raw video footage of the prison riot at the New Castle Correctional Facility in Indiana can be watched at WISH-TV's, a local Indiana news station, website here. Helicopter footage shows several fires burning on the prison grounds and prisoners moving about.
The New Castle Correctional Facility has reported that two staff members were injured. No further word on their condition is available. The New Castle Mayor, Tom Nipp, said the police department had been fully mobilized to stop the riot. He also said that prisoners were trying to tear down a fence around the prison but had not been successful in escaping the prison.
The prison riot has yet to be brought under complete control, but officials say they believe it won't be long until it is. Emergency squads, county police and Indiana State Police are all on the scene, trying to get the riot under control.

Post a CommentI know some of the guys that were involved in this thing, having encountered them at the facility I worked at here in AZ. Very interesting....good reporting! We just had an escape attempt at the Tucson facility I used to work, and I covered that on AC if you want to take a look!
i have a son in new castle he and many others aren't gatting ther meds, and many other injustices. contact me for more
I'm always for the boys burning down the walls. It's just a sighn of the times. As far as they are inprisoned too far from home when was that a right? I truely believe prisoners have too many rights as it is. Probably the real reason for the riot. I thought they were moving their worst prisoners but its non- violent drug offenders.. Thats mesed up. although as far as the families of the convicts maybe being far from you will be good for them. These people got themselves into prison with you around. I know, I know every person there is innocent... yah I got you on that one. It isn't the prison industry making all of these people do time. It's the laws that we all live by. Maybe we sould second think our rules. Just don't cry for a better place for citizens when your main focus is the prisoners. Maybe if the rules were set up differently our prison numbers would be cut in half. How about the death penalty? Now people are going to argue the point. Waisting time, talking with no real acti
Has anyone bothered to ask the inmates "why?" this happened? My son is one of those AZ inmates. He was sent there 4/9, awaken at 3am, and with only the clothes on his back, put on a plane and sent away with no explaination. Since the day he arrived he has complained to me that these men are hungry. They are crammed into a dorm with lights on 24/7. He is not concerned about the lack of recreation, (what a B.S. story that was!), he is concerned about the lack of nutrition and unsanitary conditions. They have 2 toilets per 50 men. I could go on, but why?
sorry guys, not Kansas, Ariaona, thinking of another bad situation :-)
I want to add also that our nation has the highest number of people incarcerated, could this be due to the prison complex industry? Big bucks are being made by big co-operations from prison slave labor. This riot? just the beginning I think
Some of the inmates were moved from Kansas to this facility. Imagine, your family has to travel this far to visit. Overcrowding, Yes, let the non violent drug offenders, from the "war on drugs" go!
Thanks Jamie, Khara, Charlotte and Kimberly! I would love to hear more about what caused this situation. the MSM is saying it is mostly due to the "No Smoking" policy.
This is an excellent piece! I'd heard a little about this, but you have filled in a lot for me here!
Great reporting. Thanks for the information!
