The city of Indianapolis is beautiful year round, but this is especially true during the holiday season. The time period between mid November and early January is a period where spectacular holiday light shows and attractions can be seen throughout Indianapolis. I was born in Indianapolis and still live there today. I have spent every holiday season in Indianapolis; as a result, I am aware of all of the holiday lights, activities, and attractions that take place during the holidays. There are three holiday light attractions in Indianapolis that are the most amazing, beautiful and popular. These attractions are the holiday light show at the Monument Circle, Christmas at the Indianapolis Zoo, and the displays tat take place in Broad Ripple Village.

The holiday light display that is one of Indianapolis' oldest and most favorite holiday traditions takes place at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. The monument is located at the center of downtown Indianapolis. There are many decorations and lights that adorn the monument. Hundreds of colored lights and several strands of garland are hung from top to bottom and it is one of the most amazing displays not only in Indianapolis, but in the state of Indiana. The lights will be turned on November 23 and the display will remain until January 5. The best place to view the holiday lights would be at the monument itself. Anyone wanting to view the display should park his or her car in a parking garage downtown, and walk to the monument. A decent amount of time should be spent soaking in the view. The best thing about this display is that it is completely free to view.

Another, popular holiday light display that is an Indianapolis tradition can be seen at the Indianapolis Zoo. The Indianapolis Zoo is located on the west-side of downtown Indianapolis and is very easy to find. The holiday lights at the zoo are on display from November 30 through December 30. There are many lights hung along the pathways throughout the zoo that people will follow as they view other activities. The lights are also strung throughout the numerous trees and building located within the zoo. The holiday lights at the zoo are very colorful and entertaining. There is holiday music sung by local choirs that can be listened to while the numerous displays are viewed. There is a cost to view the holiday lights at the Indianapolis Zoo, but the cost is minimal and is very much worth it.

The third holiday light display in Indianapolis that should be observed takes place in Broad Ripple, which is suburb located on the north-side of Indianapolis. Actually, this is just not one display, but rather several displays in one place. It takes place in a neighborhood known as Broad Ripple Village. Each house tries to compete with one another, and as a result the holiday light displays are very colorful and contain items such as: inflatable snowmen, a talking Santa, etc. Many local businesses join in on the fun and decorate their buildings. Admission to view these holiday light displays is completely free. The best time to view these displays would be during the first two weeks of December.

The holiday light displays discussed are only a small percentage of displays that can be viewed in the city of Indianapolis during the holiday season. Indianapolis is a city full of holiday spirit and people should take advantage of the numerous activities and displays that the city has to offer. You never know, by viewing these displays this year you might just start a tradition of your own.
