Residents who are new to the city, or those who are now looking for new transportation options due to rising gas prices, my be surprised to know that Indianapolis residents only have one option when it comes to mass transit. Though Indianapolitans may not expect a subway system running throughout the Circle City, they might have thought that at least one or two commuter trains connected the more densely populated outlying areas with the business district at the heart of the city.

Not so. Though Indy was the first city in the world to erect our own Union Station, we don't have any commuter rails running yet to connect our growing (even sprawling) metropolis.

Though plans are in the works to rectify this shortage, we are fairly well-supplied in the area of bus transportation. The IndyGo line, formerly known as the Metro Bus, runs 28 fixed routes that criss-cross the city. These routes service every township in Marion County, with the exception of Lawrence Township which is served by the flexible schedule routes.

In addition to the fixed routes, the Flex service offers patrons dial-a-ride and late night services, and the Open Door paratransit service eases the transportation difficulties of disabled patrons.

Finally, IndyGo partners with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indiana Black Expo to provide additional transportation during the events that bring the most visitors to our crossroads town - the Black Expo's Summer Celebration, the Indy 500 and the Brickyard 400.

Fares

IndyGo fares range from $.25 to $1.50 for a single ride, and from $1.75 to $55.00 for passes. Riders can purchase day passes, 7-day passes, and 31-day passes.

Children and students under 18, persons with disabilities, Medicare cardholders and seniors over 65 are eligible for half-priced fares.

Connecting to the Airport

If you need help getting to the airport, you may have a couple of options from the IndyGo bus line.

IndyGo's Route 8 (Washington Street) is the only fixed route that runs directly to the airport. However, travelers can also access the Dial-A-Ride circulators in order to access route 8 from their home areas.

You may also want to visit the Indianapolis International Airport website in order to find more information about the transportation options available in and around the facility.
