As a child, I was lightly scarred by the experience of being a junior bridesmaid forced to wear a melon colored dress made from a highly flammable synthetic substance. From this trauma, I developed great appreciation for the indie bride who just specifies the colors and length, and lets her attendants wear normal clothing. These are 5 dresses that won't doom another generation to looking like a ball of sherbet.
Sandy Starkman Smocked-Waist Dress: This vibrant print cotton dress with a calf-length, wide pleated skirt will look beautiful at the ceremony and on the dance floor. It features a surplice neckline and short sleeves. Wear this indie bridesmaid dress with tall strappy sandals ($82 reduced from $235 at Neiman Marcus).
Tadashi Shoji Ruched Taffeta Top and Velvet Skirt: For a more formal evening indie wedding, this olive taffeta top with a sweetheart neckline features all over twisted ruching and cap sleeves. The knee-length black velvet skirt features an empire waist and draped tulip design ($75 reduced from $225 at Neiman Marcus).
Elsie Jersey Surplice Dress: For a simple and sophisticated effect, this knee-length smooth jersey dress has flattering shirring on one side. Done in black or graphite, there's a deep V-neckline in front, three-quarter sleeves, and an overlapping slit down the side. This indie bridesmaid dress would look great with jeweled high heels or flats ($80 reduced from $130 at Ralph Lauren).
M Missoni Three-Quarters Length Dress: This romantic maroon dress is done in a light-weight wool viscose knit with a scooped neckline and lined interior under its lacy outer skirt. Long flounced cuffs and a set-in waist add to the poetic charm. Just slip on some velvet ballerina flats ($69 reduced from $365 at YOOX).
Green Envelope One-Shoulder Dress: This indie bridesmaid dress looks as comfortable as a sundress, but a lot more trendy for any indie wedding on the beach. The black bandage knit skirt is just under 17 inches long with a dusty mauve knit top accented by a large layered blossom on its one shoulder ($99 reduced from $168 at Bluefly).
All these indie bridesmaid dresses for under $100 look great for an indie wedding, and for being worn again on many more occasions.
