Indoor Activities for Winter Months

Amber Domke
Now that fall has arrived and winter will shortly follow we are all wondering how we can stay active during the cold weather seasons. Many of us who are regular walkers or runners lose the desire to get outside and get moving when it's so cold out. While some people may have a gym membership and are able to stay active by taking to their normal activities inside, not everyone else has that luxury.

My first suggestion would be to purchase a walking dvd or two. They have some that you can put in and walk to with a group of people. It isn't the same as taking a walk of course, but if you want to get up and get moving that would be my first suggestion. Another good idea is to purchase a small set of weights. They don't need to be real heavy and you can buy a nice case and three sets for a decent price. It's easy to store and you can always take it with you if you need to. An exercise ball is another great idea. It's great for building your core and working on your abs.

Many of us have game systems these days and I know that there are some activities on the Wii that get me moving pretty good. Boxing for example is a great one. I feel like I'm actually doing something other then just playing a game. And now they have the Wii fit. I've not tried it, but I've heard great things about it. Even if you don't have a Wii maybe you know someone who does. You could always have a workout day or two with that person. It's always better to workout with someone then it is to do it alone anyway!

The last way I'd say you could stay active inside is to put on some good music, turn it up loud and just start dancing. It sounds silly and I'm sure you'll feel silly but that is a great way to get moving. When I clean I always listen to my ipod and occasionally I'll stop to do a silly dance here or there.

Just because the colder months have approached us doesn't mean that we can't be active until Spring. We just have to look for ways to do it!
