Indoor Plants for Good Health

Arlene Schneider
There is nothing more inviting than a room full of plants. People feel better in a lush green environment. It makes you feel comfortable and alive. This is something that businesses have always known. When you walk into many office buildings you are greeted by a unique display of green plantings. Many of these businesses will actually hire services that do nothing but maintain their plants and see that their plants are always looking green and healthy.

This concept will work well in your home and will have the same effect. Not only will they enhance the look of your space, they are good for the environment. Some of these plants have even been known to purify the air and remove unpleasant odors.

Indoor plants can do a lot to improve your working and living conditions. English Ivy is not only beautiful, but is known to remove toxins from the air, especially trichloroethylene and benzene. Certain types of palms and date trees are high on the list of air cleaning plants.

Not only do house plants make you feel calmer, they are shown to reduce cold related illness, such as; coughs, sore throat and fatigue. This is believed to be attributed to the increased humidity level and decreased amount of dust.

There is 50 to 60 percent decrease in airborne molds in rooms containing plants. Many large corporations are beginning to realize the benefits of having plants in their buildings. General Motors World Headquarters in Detroit, Michigan has recently spend $500,000 to transform an old 5 story parking garage into a tropical garden complete with palms, lush plantings and white birds.

Growing plants in your home is relatively easy as long as they are given the proper amount of light and water. You can start out with one or two plants and add more as time passes and you are comfortable with taking care of your plants. With a little bit of time and some TLC you can have a home full of beautiful plants. The following types of plants have been known to remove pollutants and make great houseplants: palms, ferns, spider plants, ivy, Ficus, Philodendrons, Peace Lilies and Dragon Tree.

Adding plants is one of the least expensive ways of brightening up your home. There are several health benefits to having plants in your home, not mention the way being in an area full green living plants elevates your mood. It can look like summer all year around just by adding plants to your home.
