Grand Rapids, Michigan isn't an area that is particularly well known for rock climbing. Sure, there are a few notable places for rock climbing in the state, namely near Grand Ledge and in the Upper Peninsula, but for the most part, the state doesn't have a lot of outdoor rock climbing.

However, despite the lack of outdoor rock climbing sites, the sport is still quite popular in Michigan. There are numerous stores and clubs that cater to rock climbers and there are a number of indoor rock climbing venues across the state. Here in Grand Rapids, the major indoor rock climbing venues are:

Higher Ground Rock Climbing Centre (851 Bond Ave NW / Grand Rapids, MI 49503 / Phone: 616-774-3100) - Higher Ground Rock Climbing has been around since 1994 and it has a well-deserved reputation as one of the best indoor rock climbing venues in Grand Rapids. It is located just north of Michigan Street in downtown Grand Rapids and is open seven days per week most of the year (it is closed on Sunday from Memorial Day until Labor Day, check their current hours for any changes). The rates are very affordable, with it costing only $9 per day to climb for as long as you like (shoe rental is an additional $4). They also offer a special "first timer" special of $21 dollars that includes all your gear, a full day of climbing, and basic safety lesson. In addition to their open climbing, Higher Ground offers a variety monthly and annual pass options as well as lessons and group activities.

Inside Moves Rock Climbing (639 76th Street SW #1 / Byron Center, MI 49315 / Phone: 616-281-7088) - Inside Moves Rock Climbing is located a short drive south of Grand Rapids in the suburb of Byron Center. The indoor rock climbing venue offers affordable rates (day passes are $11 and there are a number of monthly passes available) and it is open six days per week (it is closed on Sundays during the summer). Hours are Monday through Friday 5:00pm to 10:00pm and Saturday 10:00am to 6:00pm. There are discount nights including separate ladies and college nights. Additionally, Inside Moves offers a number of lessons, gear rental, and has a selection of gear for purchase.

Kentwood Climbing Center(4620 Kalamazoo Ave / Grand Rapids, MI 49508 / Email: info@climbgr.com) - The Kentwood Climbing Center is located in the Collective Business Center on Grand Rapids south side. The venue features forty-foot climbing walls, bouldering, and a rappelling station. In addition, it has the lowest rates in town with day passes being only $5 and yearly passes just $250. Like other indoor rock climbing venues, it features a full selection of equipment rentals, lessons, a pro shop, and group discounts. Kentwood Climbing Center is open Tuesday through Friday from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and Saturday 12:00pm to 6:00pm. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

GVSU Climbing Center (215 Recreation Center / 1 Campus Dr / Allendale, MI 49401 / Phone: 616-331-3226) - Grand Valley State University's Climbing Center is another indoor rock climbing venue in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area. The Climbing Center is located on the school's Allendale campus and it is open to the general public. Non-students pay $10 per day (compared to $2 if you are a student) to use the Climbing Center with monthly, semester, and yearly options available. The GVSU Climbing Center offers a small number of lessons and rents equipment. Hours vary with the school schedule, so it is best to check ahead on their website.
