Indoor Theme Lighting for Kids Bedrooms

Lighting needs - Lighting is a very important factor in a child's bedroom. Bedrooms need an overhead light source especially after dark for a child to be able to see all areas of the room. There are thousands of items available to light your child's room but where do you start? You've chosen a neutral ceiling fixture that can last for years, perhaps a ceiling fan unit. The room serves different purposes and needs for your child. Now you need to survey the area with a critical eye and decide what interior lighting needs your child has for the activities done in the room. Generally a child plays, reads, studies and rests in the bedroom. A desk lamp, bedside table or wall lamp and a night-light are basic lighting needs.

Theme - Every child has special things that compliment their personality, a toy, a hobby, a famous character they are in love with and have to have surrounding life itself. As you shop for lighting items pick a theme to go with it. There are so many directions that you can go in. It is wise to have ideas in mind so that you do not go off track when you start shopping. Some basic themes are: Movie, doll or cartoon character, farm, ballerina, princess, nature, music, teddy bear or stuffed animal comfort, ladybugs, tea party and construction. Does your little girl love imaginative stories? She might settle into bed at night with her eyes fixed upon the soft light images from a projection lamp to send her off to happy dreams. If your little boy is a cowboy fan a boot lamp, horse carousel revolving lamp or bandanna lampshade decor might be the perfect compliments to the room. Is your child a Lego fan and you happen to be a crafty parent? Why not buy a lamp kit and construct a base of Lego's for a one of a kind treasure for the room. A crafter can make a variety of dresser or bed side lamps from many kinds of items. Make sure your lamp kit is UL listed for safety. Choose lamp crafts from non flammable sturdy materials. If you have children that are changing and may switch character loyalty at the introduction of a new cartoon character, Pixar or Disney movie then a standard lamp with a lampshade would be the best investment for the room. Use your crafting ability to change out the lampshade as your child changes. It is easily adaptable and budget oriented.

Safety and ecological concerns - Make sure to buy UL listed lighting, components and kits. A safe light is a safe child. It is good practice to have energy efficient light bulbs and lighting units in your child's room. This is an Eco lesson for your child which will prompt he or she to continue through life using efficient earth friendly lighting and materials for decorating. Recycling containers or old lamps shows your child that you can take an item, re-purpose and reuse it for a safe new lighting fixture. Lamp kits are found in hardware, craft and discount stores for reasonable prices. One safety measure to consider when lamp shopping is how active your child is. If it is possible that the child will be playing roughly with siblings or friends, tossing toys into the air a table lamp is an item ready to tumble to the floor or onto a child's head. A wall lamp may be a much safer purchase. It could also be a one time buy over a broken lamp or two needing replacement. If your child needs a night light to feel safe or to make it easier to find the wall switch in the nighttime there are many types available. Be safety alert that the light is UL approved and does not get warm to the touch. A sturdy flashlight or lantern would be a safe alternative and would tie in with a camping theme. Keep your precious child safe. Be aware also that lighting put on or near metal shelves is a potential shock hazard. Touch both at one and the sensation is very unpleasant and dangerous.

There are incredible lamps and fixtures on the market today. A quick Internet search will bring up froggie lamps for a princess palace or boy's swamp room. There are trains, boats, planes, teddy bears, treasure chests and so much more. It will be a lot of fun shopping for and decorating with these items. Let your child have a chance to express ideas about what he or she would like in the room. They spend a lot of time there and it is their haven. A teen movie buff might enjoy a strand of tube lighting for a theater effect. A car buff would smile at a hubcap ceiling light cover and a battery headlight hook-up on the foot board of the bed . A young astronomer would love to lie in bed and look up at a ceiling filled with tiny white lights. The sky truly is the limit on what you can do to light up your kids bedroom.
