Indoor Workout Option: Exercise DVDs

H. Kris Thomas

This indoor workout will keep you out of the freezing cold winter air and inside your nice, toasty home. Maybe you have grown quite the collection of exercise videos and DVDs over the years. A collection that you have yet to unwrap and enjoy. Perhaps you discounted the use of instructional DVDs as a viable workout option. Well, it is time to reconsider! If you have yet to get your hands on a great workout video, hop online to search for an exercise DVD that is at your exercise level and that promises to give you a fabulous work out. Try web giant Amazon.com for a wide selection of instructional exercise DVD's. You can choose the workout that interests you most. Consider dance videos, yoga, Pilates, aerobic dance, tai chi, kickboxing, or any other instructional video that catches your eye. Before launching into your new video work out, I recommend watching it first. Doing this will help you determine which moves you are comfortable with and which moves you'll want to practice before incorporating them into your routine. Remember that you are not obligated to do every move you see in the video. Exercise is your individual practice. Never do any move that you feel uncomfortable or unsafe practicing.

Below, you will find my top five Workout DVD picks. I have used and continue to use each of these programs.

Video #1: The Lotte Berk Method system offers a fabulous, light strength training system, which is sure to transform your body in the weeks that you commit to practicing this yoga and Pilates fusion workout.

Video #2: The Caribbean Workout Pilates program features instructors Shelley MacDonald and Jennifer Tilly who walk you through a variety of strengthening and stretching exercises. Each Caribbean Workout DVD comes with three or four 20-minute workouts that will have you more limber, energetic, and more connected to your breath.

Video #3: The Workout: One-On-One Training with Jackie DVD features celebrity trainer Jackie Warner who will give you a run for your money! This is, by far, my favorite exercise DVD. As a personal trainer, I am an admirer of Jackie Warner's instructional ability and unique training style. This thorough workout will get you amped and strong. In this DVD, Jackie Warner provides alternative or modified movements for individuals working up to a more intense workout.

Video #4: The Winsor Pilates exercise program is an oldie, but goodie. Over the years, Mari Winsor has been a prominent figure in the Pilates world, and for good reason. I found that she has an excellent instructional method, a motivating energy, and a cool and calm demeanor. Many of the moves used in this program will be intimidating to beginners. That is no reason to steer clear of this exercise program since Winsor offers alternative/modified exercises for those working up to the more advanced movements.

Video #5: The 20 Minute Yoga Makeover DVD series with celebrity instructor Sara Ivanhoe offers a fabulous reprieve from a long day of work. Ivanhoe has a laid-back approach to her practice, making her yoga instruction easy to understand and accessible to a large population. This workout is challenging, but not overly so. With this program, you will become more flexible, calmer, and more confident in your skin. If you are a yogi with moderate to high levels of experience looking for an intense yoga workout, I suggest that you look elsewhere. Most likely, you will not achieve the feeling that you are seeking. If you are looking for a soothing, even-paced yoga routine, you may find this video appealing.
