Wineries are fascinating and enjoyable businesses to visit. Do you live in Indianapolis? Do you like wine? You are indeed fortunate to have excellent opportunities to make one or more short trips to sample award winning wines at nearby local wineries and vineyards. The Indy Wine Trail is an organization of seven different wineries, all located in Indianapolis or within a short drive. These wineries provide a cross-section of styles of wine, and provide unique Trail Events throughout the year. Some are "out in the sticks" with vineyards on the property. Two are located within the I-465 beltway. One member of the group, Grape Inspirations Winery in Carmel, is currently closed due to an unfortunate fire that occurred on November 11, 2010.

Close to downtown Indy you will find Easley Winery at 205 North College Ave. and New Day Meadery at 1102 Prospect Street.

On the west side, Plainfield is the home to Chateau Thomas Winery, located 6291 Cambridge Way. Buck Creek Winery, on the southeast side of the city, is located off I-74 at 11747 Indian Creek Rd., South.

Head south to Johnson County for your next stop. Located between Highways 37 and 135 you will find Mallow Run Winery, 6964 West Whiteland Rd., Bargersville. Further south in Bartholomew County the Simmons Winery, beckons, at 8111 East 450 North, Columbus. Want to stay on the main roads? Simmons Winery also has a facility in the Edinburgh Premium Outlets at the I-65 and US 31 interchange.

Multiple seasonal events are one feature of this close-knit group of wineries. Buy a Trail Passport at any of the sites, take your time and visit each and you are rewarded with a delightful romp for your palette and a gift as well. The next event is the Chocolate Lover's Wine Trail scheduled for February 12th and 13th, 2011, from noon to 6 PM. Advance tickets are $25, with designated driver tickets for $12. Price includes wine tasting, a glass of wine, a delicious and decadent chocolate dessert and an 18 oz balloon wine glass at the 6th winery you visit. On the days of the event the price is $30.
