Inexpensive Activities in Bergen, Norway: Travel Ideas for One of Europe's Most Expensive Cities

Amy Kay
The cities in Norway are some of the most expensive cities in the world. I spent several weeks in Bergen, Norway and I was astounded at how much it costs to comfortably reside there. Bergen, Norway may be an expensive city, but you don't have to empty your pockets in order to travel there. Traveling Bergen on a budget is possible if you place some of these inexpensive activities in your daily itinerary.

Here are some of my favorite inexpensive things to do in Bergen, Norway.

Sample some whale at the fish and flower market- Bergen's fish and flower market is a must if you travel to Norway. Vendors flock to sell fresh seafood, flowers, and an array of trinkets and souvenirs. Find the vendor who is selling whale meat and ask to sample some. Sure, it may sound intimidating, but it tastes just like beef jerky. If you can't stomach the thought of eating a sea mammal, sample some of the other seafood available. The market is also a great place to buy an inexpensive lunch that you can eat by the water.

Hike Mount Fløien- Bergen is surrounded by 7 mountains, but the top of Mount Fløien offers some of the best views of the city. The entire town and surrounding fjords are visible from its peak. I don't consider myself a "hiker" and I was able to make it to the top of Mount Fløien with little struggle. If you are feeling a bit less ambitious, ride the funicular up to the top (320 meters). A single adult ticket will cost you 35.00 Norwegian Kroner (6-7 U.S. dollars). Then hike back down through one of the various gorgeous trails.

Eat Ice Cream- One of Bergen, Norway's best kept secrets is the ice cream. The soft serve in Bergen can't be beat-- It's thick and creamy and oh so good. Baker Brun is a well-known Bakery shop located in Bryggen and the ice cream there is fabulous. Order some soft serve vanilla with sweet berry candy sprinkles.

Walk along the wharf side district- Bryggen is an official Unesco World Heritage Site. With narrow alleys and stone streets you will feel like you've traveled back in time. There are also various restaurants and souvenir shops located here if you are aching to spend some money.

Visit McDonalds- I'm not endorsing American fast food while traveling abroad, but the architecture of the McDonalds located near the wharf in Bergen is worth a look. I thought it was a government building when I first saw it (aside from the large yellow arches emblazoned on its exterior).

Bergen Norway is one of my favorite European cities. Its small town charm and natural beauty is perfect for any traveler looking to relax, and you'll certainly be able to relax knowing that you're saving money with these fun and inexpensive activities.

Throughout the year, and average of 88 inches of rain fall on Bergen. This rainfall has earned the city the nickname, the "Seattle of Europe." If you plan any outside activities, make sure you prepare for wet weather.
