- New bedding. The bed is the focus of the bedroom, and the right bedding is central to the look and feel of your updated room. You may prefer to buy complementary pieces separately, or choose a matched bedding set for instant harmony. (If you already have a duvet or comforter, a new duvet cover effects a quick change.) Don't stop at the surface- choose sheets with a high thread count for maximum comfort. You really can feel the difference! Save money by skipping the big-name department stores; bargain shopping can save you a bedroom bundle. And don't forget the throw pillows.
- Paint the walls. Paint covers a multitude of sins, and a fresh coat of paint can make a bedroom feel brand new. If your walls are in good condition, but dingy or unpleasantly colored, you can paint them a single color, or play around with treatments, geometric shapes, even stripes! If your walls are scarred or uneven, use a paint treatment to camouflage the damage. Rag or sponge on two complementary colors, to cover the flaws with a shabby-chic or antique look. If your bedroom is small, use a light color on the walls to make it feel more open. A too-large room will feel more cozy with darker walls.
- Paint the furniture. Paint isn't just for walls anymore; it's for furniture too. You can easily get this fashionable look for less. If your bedroom furniture is mismatched, painting it all one color will give it the harmonious look of a matched set. If the furniture is just dingy and old, a new coat of paint will freshen it up and let you choose a more stylish color. Use a high gloss interior paint for furniture, so the new paint finish will be durable.
- Crown molding. Molding adds a touch of class to any room, and today crown molding is inexpensive and easy to install. You can purchase pre-painted crown molding made of wood, plastic, or structural foam, at almost any home improvement store . Plastic and foam are less expensive than wood, and also lighter in weight. There is no need to miter the edges; you can instead purchase corner blocks, for a perfect fit. Your bedroom will instantly look more sophisticated. If you paint the walls, wait until the paint is dry before installing the molding.
- Window treatments. If you live in an apartment, or even in some new houses, chances are that your bedroom has mini-blinds in the window. Sure, they are cheap and easy, but somewhat devoid of personality. You can find inexpensive curtains online or at local discount stores. Look for plain white, or a shade that will compliment your new bedding. Hang them right over the blinds for privacy.
Be creative and hunt for bargains. Online retailers like Overstock.com and Smartbargains.com have great deals on bedding, but so do brick-and-mortar stores like Tuesday Morning, Ikea, and even Target. With budgeting and elbow grease, you can have an updated bedroom of your dreams.
