No, I don't mean to play video games. Nowadays video games cost thirty to sixty dollars. What I mean are board games. Monopoly is one of my favorites. It's a fun game. You learn how to deal with money, you bargain, and no two games are ever alike. With many players, a game can be five hours of entertainment. And you always have stories to tell afterwards. That is the magic of Monopoly. Chess is a great game, too. Depending on the player's skill level, a game of chess can be easy or challenging. It is also good for the brain as well. You plan, strategize, set up traps, or move your pieces ever so slowly to victory; or a crushing defeat. Poker is a fun game. Played with fifty playing cards (minus the Jokers) is a game of skill, bluffing, and chance. It is a good game for socializing.
Go Outside
Find a park to walk around in and bring some water with you. Take your time to look at the trees and enjoy the sights. If you talk to a person who works in the park, you can ask them if there are any upcoming concerts. A lot of the concerts are free! Bicycle around your neighborhood. There are always people playing basketball. Ask if you can play a game with them. Is there a museum around where you live? Certain days out of the week are cheaper than others for the admission fee. And the admission fee is always less than the price of a movie ticket. Do you have a beach in your state? It would be better to park somewhere near the beach and walk the rest of the way there, to avoid a parking fee. Some beaches charge a fee for parking, but you can usually stay there all day. The sand, the sun, the water. Is there anything better? When you put your mind to it, entertainment can always be found outside.
Order a Movie
With a lot of folks these days with satellite TV and thousands of channels, watching movie is as simple as ordering it. You can have an action-packed night, or a sob all night to sad movies.
Visit the Library
Besides the obvious thing to do of borrowing a book, look for information flyer's. Many libraries have reading programs, computer programs, workshops, book clubs, show movies in the library, and music performances. Sometimes there are job search sessions, as well as special things only for teens. The good news is that most of these are free!! In addition, some libraries even have music you can check out and movies as well. Don't see something you like? You can even request books and movies!! Did I mention you can use the internet on their computers as well? With all of this, I'm sure you are bound to have something to occupy your time! (I would have said to read a book, but who really reads a book these days for entertainment?)
Host a Sleepover
OK, OK, so sleepovers are for youngsters right? Instead of inviting your friends over for a 'slumber party', just invite them over for a party. If you play your cards right, everyone will be too tired to go home. Call them up and tell them to bring one item. If your are successful with four of them coming over, you'll have something like drinks, chips, dip, and pizza. (This is also a good time to play Monopoly) Just invite friends over of the same sex though. It's more comfortable that way, and there won't be any side glances to each other when you start going to sleep. Many friendships have been lost to opposite sex sleepovers, it's just not a good idea.
