Inexpensive Green Halloween Costume Ideas for Kids

With autumn upon us once again, it is time to start thinking about your children's Halloween costumes. The stores are filled with many exciting and easy choices, but many are expensive. This year, do something different. Make a costume from old items you have in your home. You will save money by not purchasing a pre-made Halloween costume, put some of your old junk to use and do some good for the environment. This guide offers four costume ideas for kids of all ages. The materials are readily available, and you can spruce them up with little monetary investment.

Ghost - This is a Halloween classic! Cut some breathing and eye holes in an old white bed sheet, and you have a spooky ghost costume. This one is quick and easy, and will do in a pinch. Bed sheets can be trimmed down to make little ghost costumes.

Mummy - Instead of cutting holes in the bed sheet, cut it into strips. Wrap your child in the strips, and secure them with safety pins for a do-it-yourself mummy. You can add some color to your fabric with some old brewed coffee. Soaking the fabric strips in coffee will give them that ancient look. Be sure to leave a few of the ends hanging loose from the arms, body and legs for added effect.

Hobo - Here is a use for those tattered old clothes you have been meaning to sort through for the past couple of months. Find some pants with holes, old leather shoes, a beat-up old jacket and a hat, and you have a Hobo costume. Add a stick with a handkerchief bundle tied to the end to complete the costume.

Robot - This one is a crowd pleaser! Find a couple of old boxes, one big enough to fit around your child's body and the other big enough to fit on your child's head. Cut the appropriate eye, breathing, head and arm holes in the boxes. Paint them to look like a 1950s style square robot. Moon boots make nice robot feet. Also, be sure to add a colorful control panel in the center of your robot's chest.
