Inexpensive Homemade Centerpieces for Weddings

Mary Wensing Dvorachek
When planning for a wedding most couples know their wedding date for at least one to 2 years in advance. So now is the time to start planning what you want on your tables at the reception. First contact the place that will be holding your reception and find out how many tables they will be using for the size of your guest list) or hold it out doors at your own home. Whether you are having a spring, summer, fall or winter wedding, the centerpieces can be used for any season. Go to your local Dollar Tree or Discount store, and pick up glasses or pitchers, either lightly tinted or clear glass. They usually run around .99 to $1.50. Keep an eye out for a sale. Pick out several different styles and sizes, no need to have all the same. If you do not want to have all of these glasses and pitchers after the wedding, then decided to put a number under certain plates. If the person has a number under the plate, they get the centerpiece off of their table. You should have about 3 center pieces per table, so that is 3 you can give away per table.

Glasses or Pitchers filled with flowers

Now take your glasses or pitchers and fill them 3/4 full with water and add fresh cut flowers and fill them full with flowers. These flowers you can plan ahead and plant in your own flower beds or garden, depending on when you wedding is. Plant roses, carnations, daisies, ferns, daffodils, tulips, etc. Peonies make for a beautiful centerpiece. I have a neighbor who has a huge bed of peonies, and she supplies the peonies for graduations, weddings etc. So don't be afraid to ask your neighbors if you can get flowers from them too.

Rose Bowlswith Fluted edge

You can pick up the rose bowls at a craft store, Wal Mart, Dollar Tree. Price is anywhere from $1.00 to $1.50. You can either just fill them with water, and the head of a rose, carnation, daisies, sunflower, or an artificial flower. You can also purchase stones from the craft section, or stones that you put in the bottom of fish tanks (they have a wide variety of colors) Put about 1/2 cup of stones (make sure you wash the stones before using) in the bottom of the rose bowl, add water. Tie a ribbon around the top of the rose bowl, add the flower. Depending on whether you grow your own flowers or buy some artificial ones, Your total cost should be around $2.00 to $2.50 per rosebowl. Pick up artificial flowers when they are on sale, and pick the ones that are the fullest, making sure that you can get the head of the flower into the rose bowl. Usually you can get anywhere from 10 to 12 flowers per flowered bush.

Glass Mirrored Tiles

Are you planning on putting up a mirror on the back of a bathroom door? Well pick up clear glass tiles, use them for the wedding and then mount them on the back of your bathroom door after the wedding. Make sure you get the tiles that have the self adhesive backing. Pack of 12 mirrored tiles around between $20 and $30.00.

Long stem bud vases

Cost $1.00 to $2.00 per vase. Fill with water, add a single long stem flower or even an artificial flower can be used. Set on a glass mirror tile.

Set of 3 candles

Pick up sets of candles, sizes 4, 6, 8. Watch the sales, pick out the color to go with your wedding colors. Take fabric ribbon with wire in it and wrap around all 3 candles, and set on glass mirrored tile, or plate from home. So simple but elegant.

For Fall

Use miniature pumpkins, pine cones, leaves, and small gourds and place on the glass mirrored tiles. If you grow your own miniature pumpkins and gourds, it will save you alot of money. Or pick up artificial ones when all the fall items go on sale the year before your wedding.

****You can use the mirrored tiles to set your vases, pitchers, rosebowls, glasses or candles on them.

All of these items can also be used for the wedding shower.
