Inexpensive Kids' Backpacks: Where to Find Them

Tara Van Ness
Kids' backpacks can get expensive, some selling for upwards towards $100 if you can believe it! Whether you want to find a frugal alternative to the expensive backpacks, or you simply don't have the money to shell out for something your child is going to carry their schoolbooks in, consider these options:

1. Ebay

Go to Ebay and search under backpack bids that are about to expire. Simply choose the option, "time, ending soonest". There, you will find all the backpack auctions that are ending in the next minute. Quickly find one you like with a low bid, or better yet, with no bids, and bid on it at the last minute. This will ensure no one will bid higher than you, and you will get a great backpack at a price you can afford.

2. Thrift or Secondhand Store

Don't underestimate what you can find at a thrift store. Drive to a secondhand store in a very good area, and you will find unbelievable bargains for backpacks that are barely used, if used at all. Our local thrift store gets last year's Target merchandise, and we find brand new items with tags all the time.

3. Do It Yourself

Relax, you don't have to make the entire backpack yourself! However, if your daughter wants the new Hannah Montana backpack or your son is dying for a Transformers one, you can get the look of the more expensive backpacks for a lot less. You can find patches or iron-ons of popular culture at craft stores like Michaels. Alternatively, you can print your own iron-ons with computer iron-on paper. Then, buy an inexpensive kids' backpack in a solid color, and decorate it with the characters or images of your child's choice.

4. Garage Sales

Some of the backpacks you'll find here may be a bit marred, but as long as they are in tact, without rips, tears, or obvious signs of wear, you can clean them. Make sure the zippers work, there are no holes in the pockets, and all the strap tighteners are in tact before buying. Make a solution of Oxyclean and water, and let the backpack soak to remove stains. Then, stuff with a couple of old towels to retain shape while drying.

5. Arrange A Swap

This is a great way to get a new-to-you backpack for your kids, where everyone benefits. Simply arrange a swap of gently-used backpacks, and get together with your friends to trade. Then every child gets a 'new' backpack and won't be carrying the same one to school this year.

Kids' backpacks don't have to be a huge expense. It is possible to get a new or gently-used child's backpack without a whole lot of time, money, or hassle. If only finding their backpacks in the morning were as easy!
