Inexpensive Messy Outdoor Fun for Kids

Mud Pies to DIY Paintball

Jaipi Sixbear
I recently watched an inventive comedy routine by the late George Carlin, in which he lamented the fact that kids are no longer allowed to play with sticks. It's a shame this is true. Some kids are simply not allowed to have free or inexpensive messy inventive outdoor fun anymore. Some of the highlights of my childhood involved getting messy and dirty in the great outdoors.

Kids these days are regimented every step of the way. Anything remotely dangerous has been conveniently removed from their fun allowance. Even the outdoors is sanitized for their safety before they can enter it. Whatever happened to mud pies and other inexpensive messy outdoor fun for kids? When did we start telling our kids how to play?

Inexpensive Messy Outdoor Fun for Kids - Mud Pies

Kids love to dig in the dirt. Add water and it's even more messy and fun. Give a kid a mud hole, a spoon and some rocks and stuff and he'll be happy all day. Who needs a sandbox? A mud hole is great outdoor fun for kids. They will make mud pies, mud houses, even whole mud villages. Just hose them off before they come in.

Inexpensive Messy Outdoor Fun for Kids - Sheet Painting

This can get messy too. Good because that's the whole point. All you need is an old sheet and spray bottles full of acrylic or tempera paint diluted with water. This modern work of art becomes a tent for camping or whatever kids want to use it for. Remember, messy outdoor fun like this is up to the imagination of the child. Refrain from direction and just let kids have fun for a change.

Inexpensive Messy Outdoor Fun for Kids - Water Balloons and other Crazy Water Sports

Just fill up the inexpensive water balloons and squirt guns and let them have at it. Consider some food coloring in the squirt guns. Food coloring in water balloons is great for inexpensive paint ball too. No aiming at faces allowed. Have kids wear old clothes, some food dyes are permanent. When the kids are done with these inexpensive messy outdoor fun activities turn on the sprinklers for a rinse off session.

Inexpensive Messy Outdoor Fun for Kids - Body Painting

Why not go all out? Spread out an old sheets or long rolls of paper. Fill buckets with finger paint and let them paint their bodies and the sheets or paper by rolling, stepping and stamping all over the sheets. This is the most messy outdoor fun possible and kids will absolutely love it. They can also use inexpensive brushes and paint around each other to create body outlines.

Woo-Hoo for messy fun! That photo is fantastic! Thanks for reminding us of simple pleasures. As long as big sisters don't tell younger siblings the mudpies are chocolate! ; ) I've seen sheet painting, & it's super cool. Wasn't sure how to get the right consistancy for spray, though. Thanks! Body outlines on a sheet are lots of fun, too! : )

My kids are loving the mud right now, and the 8 inches of snow two days ago! I have washed their coats every night and they are no longer allowed to bring their boots in the house:) I love the pic!

Due to all the over protectivism around today, lots of the fun has been taken out of play.

Hmmm....you have been to my backyard, haven't you? I have some great footage of my offspring doing most of the above, and when they start dating, boy are we going to have fun regaling their waiting dates with some photos...
