Inexpensive Updates: Take Your Home from Drab to Fab

Lee Davis
You may not have the money for an $80,000 makeover, but a few simple tricks will make your home stylish and comfortable. Let's get started.

Before any improvements, the rooms must be uncluttered. This may take longer than expected. We rarely realize the needless accumulation of stuff. Begin with one room at a time. Do not doubt yourself, throw it out, give it to someone or put it in the garage sale. You cannot update and modernize unless you are willing to give your home the space to be beautiful.

A thorough cleaning is necessary. Yes, clean the corners, baseboards, cobwebs, sinks, tubs (including faucets)...you get the idea. After removing clutter and clean-up, you will most likely receive immediate gratification. No, do not stop now; it is time to beautify.

Using a time chart and a realistic budget, plan your strategy. I like to begin with the first areas guests and family see when entering the home. From the money you made from the garage sale, buy your paint and other painting supplies. Cover floors, furniture and tape off any special design painting areas. Save the trim for last, because your budget may allow for crown molding. Constantly check prices and speak with experienced craftsmen at Home Depot, Lowe's, Sears, or your local company. Returned material or odd pieces make for great deals and ideas.

Add an area rug, and yes, it is ok to place a rug over carpet. If your carpet is plain, use a simple pattern, and if it has a bold pattern, use a neutral. Design a seating area and create a welcoming pathway to your room. Remember, you are arranging a sitting area. Remove furniture away from the walls, add coffee table, side tables with lamps, and wall art. Go easy on the family pictures. Put them in an album; this makes a great conversation piece.

Do not over accessorize. Do not use artificial flowers nor use every piece of memorabilia collected over the past how many years. Your room will be easier to clean, healthier and easier for guest to see the pieces of memorabilia you are featuring for the month. Now, purchase one additional piece especially for you. If money allows, add a new treat for you. A small crystal vase will make a difference.

One room down and how many to go? Again, please understand that this takes time, and allow yourself a gracious schedule. Proper planning helps to eliminate frustrations. Give yourself a month for each area. Borrow or rent tools, and do not be shy to ask friends and family to assist. I shop flea markets, garage sales, Internet Sales, and estate sales.

Post your remodel on AC. Have Fun!

Very good info here. I like these ideas! I can't wait to cover my ugly living room carpeting with an area rug.
