First you have to scour some flea markets, yard sales, your attic or thrift stores. Buy old paintings or frames that are inexpensive. Just look for country style frames. Grab any old plaid ribbon pieces and half empty paint cans as you really need just a little paint. Also look for magazines and books that have nice country pictures. Buy or find any scrap wood that is a rectangular plaque size, about 15 inches long and 6 inches high, the size is not that important. Grab old spades and wooden spoons too. That was easy & fun, right?
The frames are for farmhouse, animal and country scene pictures. Don't have any pictures? No problem. Use the pictures from magazines and the old books that you have collected. Once under glass, no one should be able to tell where the picture was from. If the frame is too large, add clean, colored cardboard behind the picture.
Anything can go into these frames, not just pictures. Add a beautiful old place mat, piece of material, linen napkin or whatever you can find at a thrift store. You can usually find something for under a dollar if the rest of the set is missing. An embroidered pillowcase works well for larger frames.
Now we are going to make country plaques. Take the wood pieces and drill two holes at the top, one on either side holding the piece of wood with the longer side at the top. Next, paint the wood any color you chose. Next you can paint a saying on the plaque. If your handwriting is good, you won't need stencils. Any saying that applies is fine. I used "Martha Stewart doesn't live here". A permanent marker can be used to write with, it is much easier. Once the writing is totally dry string wire, thin rope or ribbon through the drilled holes. This is the hanger. Tie a piece of plaid ribbon on one side of the hanger and you have a great piece of wall décor.
Paint any old wooden spoons that you find, old spades work just as well. Add ribbon tied to the handles and glue small pictures in the spoon or spade end. Use ribbon or thin rope to make a hanger and you will have great three dimensional wall art. A larger shovel, painted with a scene on the end works well as a porch decoration.
Country farmhouses are usually full of great wall decorating materials without having to spend a penny. A quick search of the attic or barn should yield a few items that will spark your imagination.
