Utility bills can vary month to month, some months there can be several hundred dollars difference from the previous months. In the summer, you could be running the air condition, in the winter you will use more with lights, because it's getting darker sooner, as well as heat, how can you cut back on your usage to save money?

Heating your home: There are several ways that you can save with your electricity bills, one way is to keep your heat turned down a few degrees this is true if you heat with electric or other fuels. You may have to wear more clothing in the house, but you will be saving money, you may not notice a few degrees difference either. Investing in a timer for your thermostat will save you money over the years. While no one is home during the day you have it set lower keeping the house cooler, then an hour or so before someone arrives home have it set to come on to heat the house.

Weather stripping is another way that you can cut back on your bill. Even something as inexpensive as plastic over your windows will help save energy and reduce your bills. If you are being thrifty, you can also use old blankets and towels to place in front of the doors to prevent cold air from coming in.

Your hot water heater: For us we save money by turning it off everyday. We have it figured out that if we turn it on for an hour or so in the morning we have enough hot water to take a shower for us. Then we turn it back off. We do the same at night when we come home, and time to clean and do dishes. If you really think about it you don't use much hot water, why have the hot water heater working all the time when all you need is just a few gallons of hot water? We also have a insulated hot water heater jacket around it so that it is more efficient.

Another option that you may not be aware of is your Electric Company. They may offer free home audits where they will send someone out and give you suggestions on how to save money on your utilities. If they offer this, it's a great way to get inexpensive ideals for free. They will go through your home and find out where you could cut back and save money.
