Information You Should Have Before Seeing a New Doctor

Elizabeth J. Baldwin
Sooner or later, though nowadays it is usually sooner, we all have to see a doctor we haven't seen before. When you get to the office there are forms and yet more forms to fill out and questions to answer.

If you haven't prepared for these before hand you may not be able to fill out those forms or fully answer the questions, which can actually be dangerous to your well-being. Here are seven things to have ready before you go to see the new doctor.

1.Be sure you have your driver's license or other some other form of identification that has your picture on it. You will need your health insurance cards, which can also serve as additional identification.

2.Have a complete list of all the medications you are currently taking. Do not forget to list over-the-counter medicines and supplements, as well as your prescription medications, because some of these can cause problems with medications the doctor may want you to take.

3.Have a list of any significant illnesses or surgeries you have had. Heart problems, high blood pressure, cancer are all things your doctor needs information about if she is to treat you safely and effectively. Listing your surgeries is important because these can be a source of health problems such as infections. This is especially important if you had to have blood. Every effort is made to keep our blood supplies safe but there is always the possibility of some mistake happening or some problem that was unknown at the time of the transfusion.

4.Keep a list of the vaccinations and immunizations you have had. DPT, flu, pneumonia and shingles are examples of things that need to be on this list.

5.Have a list of any allergies you suffer from, especially those that involve medications.

6.The doctor may need information on any tests you have had done recently so have a list of these. Be sure to remember to include eye and dental procedures too. People who have certain conditions, such as a heart mummer, may need to take antibiotics before having any dental work done.

7.Your family's health history can help your doctor know if there are certain things he needs to keep an especially close eye on. If your parents or grandparents had diabetes, heart disease, or certain types of cancer, such as breast or colon cancer, then the doctor really needs this information.
This information can help your health care providers keep you as healthy as possible. And if you have neatly prepared lists you can save time and frustration for yourself and the staff.
