Information on the California Spangled Cat as Rare as the Breed

Marilyn Quinn
The California Spangled Cat has always been a rare breed. Originally bred in the 1980's to resemble a wild cat, they resemble a miniature leopard. The intent behind their engineered breeding was to make people want to shy away from wearing the fur of wild cats that were dwindling in numbers.

They were originally bred by Paul Arnold Casey, Jr; a Hollywood scriptwriter, playwright and author. While visiting Africa in 1971, he was stricken by the plight of the dwindling numbers of wild cats there. The cats were introduced in the flashiest way possible, being seen on the pages of the Neiman Marcus catalog. The marketing strategy had just about everyone mad, including animal-rights people who were against the deliberate breeding of domestic cats.

One resource cited their prices as being rather expensive and ranging from $800 to $2500 dollars. The only breeder we found a website for stated their prices as being from $800 to several thousand dollars, as well.

The development of the California Spangled Cat was overshadowed by two other spotted cat breeds, the Bengal and the Ocicat. Another source says that the survival of the breed will depend on the publics acceptance of the breed and the willingness of breeders to continue the breed.

California Spangled Cats are completely domestic despite their appearance. The are a crossbreed of many strains of cat; including Abyssinian, American Shorthair and British Shorthair. They have long, lean, muscular bodies and the spots that give them a wild cat look. Their coats may be bronze, gold, blue, brown, charcoal, red, black, silver or white in color.

The California Spangled Cats make excellent pets and adapt equally well to being the solitary cat in a home or being with other cats. They adore playing and interacting with people. They are described as affectionate, social, curious, and extremely devoted to their owners. They like eye contact and they will perch on places that are at your shoulder level to see what is going on. They love to pounce and have sharp hunting skills.

I would recommend that these be owned by families with children and people who want to be deeply involved with their pet. This breed seems like it wants to have a lot of interaction and not be left to it's own devices. Owner participation in their play would be ideal.
