Oh! Christmas tree! Americans purchase between thirty to thirty-five million real Christmas trees each year. Who doesn't love that pine aroma and deep green branches but what happens after December 25th? Don't toss your tannenbaum just yet. Many people might think it is fine to throw the tree out with the rest of the household trash because it is natural ,however, trees that end up in landfills can take decades to rot as they are covered in layers of other debris. Due to being buried under so much garbage the trees aren't able to decay and provide nutrients back into the ground. It is not recommended to cut up Christmas trees to burn in fireplaces as they contribute too much to creosote build up increasing the risk of chimney fires.

Currently only 59% of Christmas trees are recycled each year. That number can increase though if people understand why they should recycle their Christmas trees and how easy it is.

Across the country cities have developed Christmas tree recycling programs that make it easy for residents to dispose of their tree in a that is best for the environment. New York City has a program that works two ways. Trees can either be set out for pickup between specified dates or individuals may take their trees to Mulchfest run by the Parks Department in each of the five boroughs. The trees are ground into mulch to be used by the Parks Department ,however, if residents bring a bag they can take home a free bag of mulch for their own landscaping needs. Austin, Texas has a Christmas tree recycling program similar to NYC which provides residents with curbside tree pick up and has designated drop off sites. Free mulch is available after the tree collection period.

Mulch is not the only use for recycled Christmas trees. In Louisiana the discarded trees are very helpful for the shrinking coastline. The trees break the wave action which causes erosion.

In Indiana collected trees are used to create habitats for small woodland creatures such as raccoons and chipmunks. Recycled Christmas trees can also but weighted and deposited into ponds for fish habitats. Whether your community uses recycled trees for hiking trails, animal stalls or landscaping compost it will be put to good use.

Things to know before you recycle your tree. Check your local paper or community website for pickup dates or drop off locations. Many communities also accept organic wreaths , swags and bows but ask first. Flocked Christmas trees are generally not accepted for recycling. Preparing your tree for recycling is easy. Simply remove all decorations, then the lights (don't forget the topper) and remove it from the stand and it is ready to be recycled and put to good use.
