The Company: Herbalife is a publicly held company founded in 1980 that sells nutrition and weight-management products through over 2.1 million independent distributors in more than 70 countries. As stated on the Herbalife website, the mission statement of this company is changing people's lives by first providing the best direct business opportunity and second to distribute the best products in the world.
Balanced Nutrition: Herbalife offers six steps to help you achieve balanced nutrition, reminding you the proper nutrients give your body the fuel it needs to perform your daily activities and "make your best shape a reality". Its program promotes eating a health breakfast, small frequent meals, nutrition-packed snacks, regular hydration and essential nutrients. Herbalife specifically suggests using one of its meal replacement products for breakfast.
Meal Replacements for Weight Loss: The Herbalife diet program promotes using meal replacements as a core part of your daily diet plan. It suggests eating meal replacement products instead of consuming a regular meal or a snack. Consuming Herbalife fortified beverage mixes and bars provide a quick and easy way to attain nutrition and a control the amount of calories in your daily diet. You can choose from a variety of flavors including: Cookies n' Cream, Wild Berry and Café Latte.
Multi-Vitamin: A multi-vitamin, marked as a weight loss enhancer, represents another core product suggested for the Herbalife diet program. Herbalife says its multi-vitamin tablet supports management of a healthy weight. It claims to formulate the tablets for optimal metabolism and cellular repair. However, these statements have not been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Product Contamination: The causality between Herbalife products and two unique incidents of patients with severe liver injury was scored as "probable", according to Leonard B. Seeff, M.D. in the January 2009 issue of the "Journal of Hepatology". One patient had consumed the Herbalife strawberry and cappuccino shakes, while the other had consumed multiple products. Analysis of the products for contamination showed bacterium identified as Bacillus subtilis-commonly found in soil.
