Limiting personal information is extremely important when it comes to your safety on the Internet. And never give away personal information to a person that you meet on the Internet. Even though the Internet is a great tool for meeting people, you can never be 100% sure if the person is who and what they say they are. Also, if you have known someone for a while, giving out personal information is a no-no. You do not want to acquire a stalker or give your information out to someone who is out to steal your identity. If you do decide to meet someone, make smart and safe decisions. Meet them in a neutral location outside your home, and make sure someone knows where you are going and who you are with. Finally, set a "check-in" time with your friend in case something does go wrong - so someone knows where you are and where too look.
Employers are another group that you do not want to have access to your personal information from a website. It may make a poor impression and reflection on your personality. In the end they may end up seeing you as a liability and not an asset to your company. Some information that you never want to include is your specific location, status (this is dangerous for single females), employers (past and present), and banking information - just to give a few examples.
Talking about people you know on your website or blog can be a liability as well. After all what happens if they see or read this information? You may end up harming your personal relationships or even your job if you are talking about your employer. Also, some employers have clauses (such as the medical field) where you are not to discuss what happens in the company - and posting such information on your site or blog can lead to you getting fired. So make sure to think before you post, and what could happen if someone you know sees what you have posted.
Pictures can tell a thousand tales and there are some that you do not want prospective employers, (and even friends) to see. Know that once you post a picture, everyone can see it. And don't think private pictures are actually private - there are many hackers that can easily get into your information and spread those photos all over the Internet. It is better to keep your photos safe on a CD or in your photo album.
Remember before you put anything on the Internet, use your best judgment. Treat what you see as being seen by everyone - known and unknown. And before you post ask yourself: is this safe for me, and is it information that is okay for everyone to know?
