Information About and How to Play Popular College/Party Beer Drinking Games: Beer Pong

Drinking games are currently becoming increasingly popular - possibly due to media exposure or due to word-of-mouth. Either way, these games are fun for people of every age (over 21, of course), and aren't just for college kids anymore.

There are many drinking games out there ranging from card games such as Kings to older drinking games such as the infamous Quarters - where the object of the game was to bounce a quarter off of a table or other surface and have it land into a glass or cup of some sort. Beer Pong, however, seems like more of a new age drinking game that appeals to people of every age due to it's addictive and fun nature.

Keep in mind that drinking games aren't for everyone, and that each player that is drinking should be of legal age to consume alcoholic beverages (21+ in the United States).

Beer Pong being the most popular drinking game these days can be seen in an array of media exposures including video games such as "Pong Toss" on the Nintendo Wii (Note: technically "Pong Toss" isn't "Beer Pong" since it makes no reference to the game containing any alcohol, but the rules and game setup are essentially the same) to movies and videos on YouTube.com.

The Setup: Beer Pong is generally setup with four players - two players per team, one team on each side of the table. Each side has ten cups on their side setup in a bowling pin-like fashion (four cups in the furthest row, three in the row in front of that, two in the row in front of that, and one cup in the front - making a triangle formation). There are two balls involved in this game - the balls used in Beer Pong are generally basic ping pong balls.

Each team throws the balls in a pair, although generally not simultaneously. For example the team shooting has player A and B, while the other team that is waiting has players C and D. Player A (or B) shoots first, and then their team mate shoots (the remainder of A or B). Then the other team (C or D) shoots, then their remaining team mate shoots the ball. This shooting order continues throughout the remainder of the game.

The Goal: The basic goal of Beer Pong is to eliminate all cups on the opposing side of the table. Each time you (or your teammate) throws a ball and gets it in a cup, the opposing team must take that cup away from the rack and drink it's contents.

The Rules: There are a multitude of rules when it comes to Beer Pong, and they change from game to game, depending on the house rules. However, some rules of the game never change.

For example, it's factual in the game of Beer Pong that each player shoots a ball while taking turns. One team shoots, and then the other. This keeps going back and forth until all of the cups on the opposite team are eliminated.

One tactic used by people is "bouncing" the ball into the cups. By doing this the person that bounced the ball into the opposing cups forces the other team to take two cups away. However, when a player bounces the opposing team may block or swap the ball away. Due to this it is best to bounce when the other team isn't paying attention.

Another basic rule that hardly ever changes is the ideology of "racks", or reformations of the cups, each team gets per game. The general amount is two, although some people play more or less.

One more increasingly known rule to seasoned Beer Pong players is the rule of "Send Backs". This means that if you and your team mate each sink the balls that you each throw into separate cups on the same turn that you get the balls back to shoot again. However, if you and your partner each shoot and get the ball in the same cup then you win automatically. This rule (the rule of you and your team mate each sinking the same cup to win the game automatically) is widely known as "The Party Cup".

As for more in-depth and crazy rules it gets a little more abstract. Some people will play a rule titled "Island" - meaning that if there is a lone cup not being touched by any other cups and a player calls "Island" aloud and successfully sinks the designated cup that the team scored against has to take two cups away. However, if the team that called "Island" misses the cup and hits another cup instead, that cup will not be taken away. The general rule is that each team member per team gets one "Island" each game.

Different people and places play different games, but the general rules usually remain the same. Before each game I suggest that both teams talk and discuss the rules of their upcoming game so there is minimal discrepancies.

**Pro Tip: I highly suggest having another person watch the game, or referee, as games can get relatively face-paced and intense. If one team isn't looking and the other team bounces, for example, they may not believe the shooting team that one of their players made a successful bounce (meaning that the team shot on would need to take two cups away). Having a third party there mitigates the tension involved and can be used to clarify such shots.
