Information About Pumpkin Seeds: Where to Plant, How Deep to Plant

Shannon Frye
Everybody wants to grow a pumpkin patch. It's not very hard to grow your own pumpkins. You will need some good pumpkin seeds which you can purchase from any local greenery. Make sure that you purchase a few extra seeds just in case some of them never grow or you plant them too deep. You can get several pumpkins off of one pumpkin seed so you don't want to take over your whole yard with pumpkins. If you want a smaller pumpkin patch you can purchase about 20 seeds and produce around 50 pumpkins. If you want a large pumpkin patch you will need to purchase more seeds.

If you are worried that your pumpkin patch might get too much sun you could never be more wrong. Pumpkins absolutely love the sun. In fact, the more sun that you can give your seeds or your pumpkins, the better. Try to find a good area with a lot of sun and grab your seeds. You will also need to purchase something to dig a small hole for the pumpkin seeds and you will need to move around some dirt. If the dirt is really dry you might want to gently mist down the dirt to give it a little bit of moisture for the seeds.

You will need to plant the seeds where they can get at least 7 hours of sunlight per day. This means if you're planting them next to your garage and the sun will only reach them several hours per day you might want to think about placing the pumpkins somewhere else. You need to give them direct sunlight for a good amount of time per day.

You will want to plant the seeds in the spring when the temperature is reaching around 72 degrees and there will not be another frost. You will want to plant these pumpkin seeds early on before the summer months because it will take about 4 months for the pumpkins to fully develop. You don't want to plant them too early then they will rot before Halloween!

Most of the seeds are planted in small hills about two or three feet apart from another. You will want to make the mound of hill about three or four inches high and place several seeds all the way around the hill. If you want the plants to sprout faster you can place the seeds in a cup of water the day before you plant them to split the outer shell.

In a few weeks the plants will start to show through the soil. You will see two leaves at the top of the soil. Depending on how many plants you planted on the hills, you will need to only keep about 2 per hill. This means you can transplant the others to a new located and spread out the plants as far away from each other as you can, at least five feet part from one another.
