Inglis Island Trails - Just East of Inglis, Florida

Eric Brennan
The Inglis Island Trails are a system of loop trails that skirt along the islands length among the forest and near the rivers edge. Located east of Inglis, Florida, the Inglis Island Trail System is a unique and mysterious manmade island. Created in part for the water lock system of the west coast section of the cross Florida barge canal, Inglis Island is now home to a diverse and isolated forest and its wildlife.

The over 1,200 acres of forest on Inglis Island is covered with a wide variety of habitats. Mixed hardwood hammocks, pine flats and cypress swamps are but just a few of the diverse ecosystems this area has to offer.

With just a handful of actual trail miles, it is very difficult to get lost. And being on an island makes it even easier to know where you are. With the well marked blazes on the trees, finding your way around is simple and enjoyable. Hikers, bikers and horse riders are all welcome on the Inglis Island Trails. Equestrians should call ahead to be let onto the island.

What makes this island great is the fishing. Both fresh and saltwater fishing opportunities are available on different areas of the island. Above the dam is Lake Rousseau, a gorgeous bass filled lake, well known for its trophy fishing. On the southern tip of the island, access is available to the Florida barge canal and saltwater fishing abounds.

There are two ways to get to Inglis Island. Both start from US 19/98. South of the Withlacoochee River, follow Riverwood Drive to the Inglis Dam Recreation Area. Park your car at the trailhead terminus. Restrooms and potable water is available. The other way to access Inglis Island Trails is by boat.

However you access Inglis Island Trails, once you're on the trails, you'll find one of the most peaceful and serene river walks in the state.
