The movie start off with an amazing dialog between one of the main Nazi characters and Jewish dairy farmer in French during the occupation of World War II. The conversation is very much that of other Tarantino movies. It feels long and drawn out in the good way that only Quentin seems to accomplish. Only it is in a mixture of french and English. It is very different to read the conversation that Tarantino has written himself in subtitles. Not something that we are totally used to from him.
The plot as most of Tarantino's films are is very dialog driven. There are long instances of tense situations behind enemy lines where the conversation alone is unnerving even to the audience. The story closely follows the actions of a secret Jewish-American operation known only as the "basterds". Set on causing fear and panic through the ranks of the third Reich through bloody encounters and psychological warfare. The other main point of the story follows and young Jewish girl hell bent on getting revenge on the conglomeration of murders that slaughtered her family before her eyes.
I don't want to ruin too much and go into great detail about the plot and ruin the movie for you so I thought I would talk about some of the characters. First off, If you are going to watch this movie for Brad Pitt's character " Aldo The Apache", than this movie may not be for you. The acting feels shallow and almost fake. I am not sure if this is what Quentin was going for. Although it does have an old war movie feel to it with the amount of dramatic drawl he uses in his southern accent. It almost feels like every word is a punch line. So if that is the case than good work Brad. The most notable character in the movie is definitely Shoshanna. The young Jewish woman posing as a french cinema owner. The same cinema that will be hosting a grand opening of a movie made by none other than Joseph Goebbels. A notable character in both real life and the movie.
One of my favorite aspects of the movie is the fact that Quentin decided to add Adolf Hitler to the movie. This is not always an easy task for any director or the actor playing the the fuhrer. This obviously can either make or break a movie, or career for that matter. But it was pulled off so brilliantly by the German actor Martin Wuttke. The intensity of this character is almost always impossible to portray. Maybe the fact that the actor is a native German is the key to the success of it.
Two notable characters in the "Basterds" are those played by Til Schweiger and Eli Roth. Roth being the baseball bat fanatic Sgt. Donny Donowitz, or the more even noteworthy nickname given by the military of the third Reich " The Jew Bear." Schweiger's character being that of Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz. The once gestapo Sgt. gone rogue Nazi-killer.
All of these ingredients make up what is a powerhouse of gore, subtitled dialog, and very history driven revenge of a shoot em up epic. This is definitely one of Tarantino's best to come for quite some time.
