During the Pittsburgh Steelers' 23-14 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in the 2009 AFC Championship game, Ravens running back Willis McGahee was injured in a helmet to helmet clash with Steeler safety Ryan Clark.

AFC Championship Game

McGahee's injury occurred after he caught an 11-yard pass from Joe Flacco late in the fourth quarter. As soon as McGahee caught the toss from Flacco, he was hit by Ryan Clark whos helmet and shoulder hit McGahee in the face mask.

McGahee was subsequently removed from the field by stretcher with many fearing that he had suffered a major spine injury. Recently, NFL officials reported that McGahee has movement in all extremities with no neurological or spine injuries evident but would continue to recuperate at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital while undergoing observation.

Before he left with the injury, McGahee had 60 yards rushing on 20 attempts, 2 TDs, and 2 receptions for 13 yards. The Ravens did report that McGahee will undergo surgery on his left knee, although it was unclear if the injury was related to the hit he took in the AFC Championship game by Clark or from previous injuries.

The Ravens would ulimately lose the game after closing to within 2 points in the 4th quarter, 16-14. For the 2008-09 season, McGhahee split time in the Baltimore backfield with Le'Ron McClain and Ray Rice, but still was able to gain 671 yards and score 7 touchdowns during the regular season.
