Innocence Destroyed: A Poem

Scott Bauer
A tender girl

Highbrow and pure

Her father, innate avarice

Places her on a princesses' mattress

She travels a common road

Attitude higher than the rest

Looked upon as a queen

The sun rises for her

On the right

Stands a building's grace

Mirroring her position

She smirks as her image is revealed

On the left

In a corner trash heap

Forgotten by choice

With spirits in hand, a man in rags lies

Aghast, abhorred

Amazed, anguished

Her face loses dignity

As she stares unfocused

Intimate decision made

She realizes her misfortune

And her mistakes

As she casts off her chains of wealth

But by her moral revelation

The drunkard remains unchanged

Unaltered is his sight of life
