Ins and Outs of Trout Fishing

Erin Kilgour
While the trout is not the easiest of the freshwater fish to catch, when it strikes glory triumphs. Unlike the crappie and other freshwater fish, the trout has a heightened intelligence, with keen senses allowing him the ability to know his surroundings, making the catch harder. When it comes to luring them in, with the right fishing bait and proper techniques, you will increase your chances of strikes.

If you are going to use trout flies for a trophy catch, minnow and stone flies are good choices. Trophies tend to seldom swim up to the surface to feed, but hang out in deep waters; therefore dry flies are not as effective as wet. Use larger lures for the trophy catch that mimic baitfish as the larger trout eats fewer insects. The best trout lure to catch a trophy is the Mepps Aglia spinnerbait. Use a six pound test or less as your leader, as the trophy will be less likely to detect your line when a possible strike occurs as when you use a heavier line.

Positioning is very important. Don't waste your time trying to lure in a trophy in shallow water- you will be wasting your time. The best spot will be deep pools in lakes and trout streams. You will also find the trophy in logiams where they feel protected and hidden away. Downstream of a trout stream is another area where you will find the larger trout due to its attraction to warmer water. It is important to remember that the trophy is not going to go searching for a meal so you are going to want to position your lure right in front of its nose, where an easy meal can be found. Stay as quite as can be as movements and noises will create vibrations and the suspicious trophy will swim back to its favorite hiding nook.

Spring will increase your odds at strikes as the waters are fully stocked with trout. As all well seasoned fishermen and fisherwomen realize, trophy trout fishing whether for rainbow, brown, flathead, apache, mamorata, brook, cutthroat, ohrid or golden, will introduce you to some of the most beautiful country in the United States. Take added care to respect the nature that so beautifully houses these fish and keeps them healthy through sanitary waters and well maintained land. It just may mean the difference of the meal on your dinner plate!
